I think Sam Elliott is actually going to win now. He is so loved and respected and I personally think he is great in the film, I found it a very touching performance.
Also, he has been doing films since 1967, and is very well known, yet this is his first ever film role to get him award nominations! He's been nominated for TV but never film bar a few Ensemble awards, and that's just insane!

If Roma wins best picture then the Oscars are irrelevant to normal people and I will never watch them again. Well that's your own fault for thinking they are relevant to normal people in the first place... What on earth ?
The Oscars are watched by 32 million people in USA.

That's a bit childish of you, particularly as you aren't even giving me a chance to explain how you clearly misunderstood my post, or didn't bother to properly think about it - differing opinions are the whole point of a forum, as is a hint of sarcasm detector. Either way, your response was very mature... If you'd cared to ask me to clarify instead of overreacting, I would have told you that I was simply making the point that people have been complaining for years that film awards, and the Oscars especially, are increasingly irrelevant to ordinary people as the films nominated were not the big box office hits - i.e., exactly the point of your original post without the slur on a specific film/type of film. Viewing figures in that respect are irrelevant. The Oscars have never been about rewarding the films that made the most money or had the most exposure, so in that respect they have always been fairly irrelevant to many ordinary people, and I stand by that comment. The point is that this is the year the blockbusters ARE nominated, perhaps more than ever, so the awards are undoubtedly increasingly relevant this year in that respect.

The Oscars - just like every other award ceremony going - are about promoting the industry as a whole. If they actually happen to recognise the best performances and films in any given year it is just a happy accident.
That is why awards go to people with illustrious careers who have never won even if it’s not the best performance in the category. It’s also why there is so much angst when the winning films drift too far away from what people are actually going to the cinema to watch, and when they don’t reflect the diversity of the audience.

Who cares about awards? Of course when a film, or actor, or musical or whatever I love gets one, I'm happy, but if not, oh well. At least *I* enjoyed it.
What I always say, there aren't good or bad films. There are only two kind of films: the ones I like, and the ones I don't. Same goes for music, actors, shows, etc.

I get to vote each year, which is always exciting, but something of a responsibility, especially when it comes to categories such as Best Sound design as opposed to Best sound editing. On tricky ground there.

I still think there should be just one Sound catagory. No one knows the difference anyway and I don't get what makes Sound so special to get two catagories even though most of the nominees get nominated in both catagories anyway whilst something like Hair and Makeup are grouped together when they are two completely different artforms and for some stupid reason, only can have three nominees as opposed to every other category.

Slowly working my way through the nominees....
Saw Bohemian Rhapsody tonight - exceptional! I would love to see Rami Malek win. Saw "The Wife" a few days ago. Glenn Close is wonderful it's true, and I thought the film was very good, but I'm not sure of the "hype"
The Favourite - Laugh out loud hilarious. I will be crossing my fingers for this one A Star is Born - I really wasn't fussed when I saw it in the summer. I thought it was "good". But I do think Shallow should and will win best song.
Seeing a preview screening of Green Book tomorrow, Very much looking forward to it.
Must see Regina King in what is sure to be her finest performance since Miss Congeniality 2. Honestly, love her. American Crime anyone? Also must see Melissa Mccarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Roma and Black Panther just don't interest me.

Finally caught up on the nominations and pleased to see quite a few films/performances that I enjoyed have been nominated. In my opinion 2 snubs were Bradley Cooper for Director (though at least he’s up for others) and First Man, which I thought should have been nominated for Cinematography.
Would love to see Richard E Grant win Supporting Actor. The video he posted when he was nominated was so sweet.

Bradley joined Gaga for a performance of "Shallow" at her Vegas show the other night (usually the final song in her set, sung solo). A lovely performance, I hope we see them perform together at the Oscars, which this gives me more hope it will happen!

Saw Green Book today at a preview screening. What a great film! I’d actually love to see it walk away with the top prize.

Emily Blunt FINALLY won an award this year for Best Supporting Actress at SAG for A Quiet Place. This is just the eighth time in SAG history Supporting Actress will go to someone who doesn't go on to win the Oscar.

Wow. So the SAG Awards have just ended and we have our four winners. Glenn and Mahershala are locks at this point. It's Christian and Rami battling it out for the Oscar and I'd be happy with either. Emily was just a thrill and whilst she can't win the Oscar, I'm thrilled she got some recognition for her great year! Best Actor - Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) Best Actress - Glenn Close (The Wife) Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali (Green Book) Best Supporting Actress - Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place)

How do you extrapolate from those awards that Close and Ali are locks but Malek isn't? If anything, the SAGs show that Malek and Ali are the locks. And that Regina King is so much more likely to take Supporting Actress given Amy Adams couldn't even win when King wasn't nominated. Close was always going to win the SAG - it's a peer vote. The Academy is more complex, so there is still a chance they could reward a great performance (Colman) over someone who would be winning purely because she's considered "overdue" (Close). Yes, the SAG win hasn't harmed her chances at all, but Colman is almost certain to get the Bafta so it really doesn't make Close a lock yet - I think it's the only acting category that still can't really be called. Close has a slight edge now, but is by no means certain yet. We're also no clearer on what will take Best Picture at the Oscars given Black Panther took the equivalent award last night!

I say Ali and Glenn are locks because they have both won everything. I can see what you mean about Glenn, because one of her wins was a tie and Olivia won the other Globe, but I just think at this point there is no stopping her. Will Malek and Bale, they have been splitting awards all season, so BAFTA may give us a more clearer idea which I suspect Malek will take. I don't know what's going on with Supporting Actress, I don't think BAFTA will make much of a clearer picture but we shall see. Two things that made me laugh last night, firstly John David Washington has a losing face just like his father. 😂 and also, I loved that Gaga was acknowledged with a hug or a grab of the hand by Malek, Blunt and Close on their wins, which was lovely to see.

I've just caught Beautiful Boy at the cinema this afternoon, and good god Chalamet really was robbed! What a performance. Emotional, gritty, haunting, he does it all. It's tough because last year I imagine he would of won if Gary Oldman didn't have the "it's time" factor, and this year Sam Rockwell appears to be the one who took his place sadly. I do wonder if because he is so great in everything, he will just be one of those actors who had to go above and beyond to really show he can push it just that tad more. I also think Steve Carell should of been nominated too for Best Actor, and it's a shame no one has picked up on him, but I guess it is because it is such a stacked year in Actor and no one has really been talking about this film. But he waabsolutely fantastic, I'd argue the best performance I've ever seen him give.

I think Sam Elliott took Timothee's place in the list for the Oscars not Sam Rockwell. Sam Rockwell ('Vice') has had fairly steady nominations all season. Sam Elliott for 'A Star is Born' is the one that seems to have sneaked in at the Academy Awards.

But I'd argue, on the basis of performance alone, Sam Elliott is the one who should be in there over Rockwell, who is basically a cameo, imitation rather than a fully formed performance (in my opinion haha). I think the fact he was in Vice was the thing that got him in there.

Best actor will likely be close between Rami and Christian. I agree that Rami will likely win the BAFTA given that Queen have a strong British connection. For the actual Oscar it is really a toss up, if Christian hadn't ever won one the I might think he'd get a few extra votes who think he is overdue one.
Olivia Coleman has given the performance of her career but I think best Actress deserves to go to Glenn Close and she will definitely get a lot of "career votes" as this is her 7th nomination and she is in her 70's now.

Doesn't look like we will get a performance from Emily. Given that she doesn’t really sing anymore, I shouldn’t get my hopes up about it being Queen Julie (but I still will)

She could be singing about her own voice - which is now so sadly lost. She can still speak-sing with the best of them - and that is all that is needed to get a standing ovation!
