Wicked has standbys for the two principal roles, and Bayer recently became the official alternate in ETAJ and Dreamgirls has a team of 3 Effie Whites as well as a standby. Some of the vocal, physical and emotional stuff Evan does is insane and seems impossible to sustain 8 times a week without some kind of vocal or emotional problems arising. 6 times a week seems much safer for this role. Bayer offically becomes Alternate tomorrow night when he performs! I think Dreamgirls is the prime example of the arguements against a Standby, in the sense of three alternates is a joke. It makes me laugh though that once Amber left and they went to three girls alternating because they wanted to always have a lead girl "on" to stop the comments from audiences about the lead being off, yet it wasn't until this happened all three girls were off and they had to put the understudy on. 😂😂 I usually am fine with a Standby in a show, but when there are shows like Dreamgirls, Bat Out of Hell etc having two Standbys for one role, I do kinda give the side eye. I don't know why, I just do.

Regardless of who plays Evan, I can’t get over how ridiculously perfect The Dearman is for Heidi. I can so clearly hear her singing So Big So Small in my head.

How about 42nd Street allum Greg Bernstein for Evan? He sounds pretty great here!

Let's get back to DEH. I wonder if they'll have an alternate Evan? It's a hugely demanding role, and if they cast a younger actor (e.g. Luke Bayer, or someone fresh out of college), they may not be trained fully enough to learn how to handle it. I don't know why they wouldn't. If they start out with an alternate, then it becomes the norm, rather than hyping up an 8-show Evan and inevitably disappointing people twice a week.

Completely forgot that the novelisation of Dear Evan Hansen is being released tomorrow. Will be interesting to see if it’s any good or just a cash grab.

I had another casting thought earlier today at work, how about Lucie Shorthouse for Alana? Its not as much singing as I'd like to hear her do, but I can see her certianly pulling off the comedy in that role, and the little parts she does sing she'd certianly sound great!

I want Grace. She’s my swing queen at Six, and I think she’d be great in this role (I mean, it seems like a bit of a thankless role, but I think she’d do well in it)

Would Jamie Muscato be to old for this now? He did work with Pasek & Paul before on Dogfight at Southwark Playhouse, so thought he’d be in with a shout.

It would be lovely to have a cast of unknown performers and not just people from other average musicals in the West End just now!

Well this one is the weirdest content/potential audition I've seen in a while. Youtuber Hazel Hayes singing (for sponsored content) while in the bath.

At Eugenius on Sunday I could really see Rob Houchen as Evan. But I agree, It would be wonderful for it to go to an unknown

Does Rob Houchen count as a "known" then? I had never heard of the guy until two months ago when I bought the Broken Wings-CD and then saw him in Eugenius two weeks ago - a small show in a small fringe theatre. I'd still classify him as a relative unknown deserving of a big break.

Well he's definitely already working and for me he has a name in theatre. But Like I said I think he would be wonderful, he definitely has the voice to sing the score fantastically

I think Evan could be a real launchpad for someone like him on the cusp of 'big leading man' status. And I love the little funny looking fella, and he has the right mix of sweet good looks but not being 'Hello I am Handsome Leading Man' to be Evan.

I love Rob but I don't think this is the role for him. I prefer someone totally unknown.

I'd actually like it to go to someone who has been in the Ensemble for years and never had that chance to be the lead.

Who will be conducting this? It better not be an unknown otherwise I will not be attending.

Laura Baldwin currently Janey in Eugenius would be a perfect Zoe.
I hope they cast an unknown as Evan. Someone just graduating or graduated that knock its out of the park!

There ain't no tap dancing in 'Dear Evan Hansen'.
