They seem to have released back two rows of the stalls for all dates at £50 each - not bad in the Gielgud to be honest! Dissapearing quick though! Thanks so much for posting, my dad had been moping about me and my mum going to opening preview without him and I just managed to snag the last two!

Why can’t people do 8 shows a week anymore? He’s been trained to do that and once the score is vocally set in his mind/body/voice box he will be fine. Drama school students belt their lungs out for 10 hours a day! Why shouldn't they have alternates? Give two people a chance in the role and help preserve both of them (vocals and energy wise) for longer so they aren't damaging their careers long-term. It makes complete sense in more ways than one. True, but taking off all matinees implies they are the second class tickets, and they shouldn't be. A lot of people can't go out so late, some have to travel back to where they live etc, so the main cast should do some matinees.

What implies a second-classness? That's the value YOU choose to give it. Plenty of alternates take over at some point. Think of it as being able to see them early.

No, I'm never one to care that much, I went to see Natasha Barnes in Funny Girl a few times because I loved her in the role. But a lot of people do want to see the main cast at some time, and some of those can only attend a matinee, so it stands to reason the main cast should perform in matinees to not do a disservice to those shows.

In this case, Evan is a highly demanding role, so it’s better for the actor to take a show off when they have a two show day as opposed to a Monday evening, so they are never having to sing that role twice in one day.
Although, on the recent tour of Miss Saigon they had the alternate Kim go on for Thursday evenings and Saturday matinees, to give the Thursday matinee audiences a chance to see the lead I guess.

Similarly, Andrew Polec nearly always did the Bat matinees, preferring to miss the evening of a two show day.

Yep. Sometimes the alternate is not the cliched "matinee Evan/Kim/Frankie Valli/Christine." Or sometimes they are, and it switches up at some point.
Live theatre is a crapshoot anyway when it comes to a cast. There are other people in the show.

On other shows like Six, the alternate schedule is completely random. Each of the six leads are allocated a random show off every week as part of their contract. It's kind of like alternate roulette.

According to the website, there will be a ticket lottery for this along with standing tickets released at the box office on the day.

I'm selling a ticket on the noticeboard, it's a good seat and i'm selling it for pretty much half price so head on over if you still want and ticket and can't afford £127....

Went to see this on Broadway this evening and I do not get the hype at all. This is easily one of the most overrated things I've ever sat through. I don't think anything would convince me to go see this in London.

I don't think anything would convince me to go see this in London. 100% this! I saw the Toronto production in June and I felt the same. Everyone around me was sobbing but I didn’t get it. Maybe I’m too old for this (I’m not that old but school was a couple of years ago... 😉) but I just couldn’t sympathise with Evan. He kept lying and made everything worse all the time and he got off way too easy for all of it for my liking. Maybe teenagers can identify with that but for me it was just weird. I liked the music and I wasn’t bored but I’m glad I got a relatively cheap ticket and didn’t pay Broadway prices for it. I have no intentions of seeing this again in London either...

This is why I haven’t booked. Teen angst has limited appeal for me and it all sounds a bit self indulgent. The few songs I’ve heard from it have been underwhelming, Waving Through A Window being one example. Apart from that if it’s going to have loads of kids crying through it I’ll give it a wide berth.

Everything I've read and heard has been marmite. People who love it, and people who think it's terrible!
Hopefully going to catch it in previews to make my mind up!

Saw it in NYC a couple of years back. It’s very slick, and was very moving to the teenagers around us, but we felt you could see the mechanics of it a bit too much on the stage. Everyone gets a song, and in the second half this becomes a bit draining as the songs (especially those of the parents) add very little. The lighting especially invoked the annoying Hamilton gig-theatre effect which unfortunately meant that there was a lot of walking around and then turning out front dramatically on nearly every song. It became funny after a while though.
The songs are wonderful, but there was something that felt manipulative being sat there. It does and will work on the teens in the audience though as it gives many MANY opportunities to be emotional. But we couldn’t get past the feeling that it had all been engineered for a certain response. It works perfectly for the sort of inward looking “what about MY life and MY feelings” “does anyone care about ME?” mindset, which teenage years are all about. Less so adult ones.
I’ll be going here though as I have two friends whom I know will love it, and not see those elements.
But it fell into the good, not great category seeing it live. Which will save me £££ in the long term!

I'm really looking forward to it. Some of the songs make me well up with no context so I'm taking that as a good sign!
