Finally got around to seeing this at today’s matinee after grabbing the last front row seat a few days ago. Despite the neck ache I currently have from being in the front row, I thoroughly enjoyed this, particularly with the more immersive experience being sat at the front. We had Tsemaye Bob-Egbe as Tina at this performance. Absolutely fantastic vocals from both her and the entire cast. Loved the slick choreography and the frocks. I’m also happy that there was a revolve in use and used to great effect. The use of the video screen at the back of the stage was a bit trippy at times, particularly during the earlier songs from the 60s. Banded sounded great.
Certainly, I thought Act 2 was the better half for me as it had the more familiar songs from her back catalogue. Though Tsemaye really did a great job with “River Deep” and “I don’t want to fight no more” in Act 1.and by the end with the concert ending really did get the whole auditorium going.
I’m glad that the audience at this performance heeded the pre show announcement about not singing and dancing until the end and no phones in use which was great.

I wonder if they’ll get it out in tour while the WE production is still running. I think the love for TT would make it a dead cert anywhere in the country.

So excited about this. Aisha honestly is amazing as Tina. Great news that understudy Ike will be playing the role full time.

From what I’ve seen of the broadway pics the stage is laid out a bit differently with the band on a sort of scaffold. At the Aldwych there’s just a raised platform with a few steps. On Broadway it’s much bigger and higher.

No major west end theatre is opening this year. Period. Easter at the earliest if we’re lucky.

Looks like the reopening date for Tina has been put back three weeks to 24 June. Tickets are on sale from that date on the Nederlander website.

Feeling a bit miffed, back in April I booked £30 upper circle tickets for July which ultimately ended up getting cancelled and refunded as reopening was pushed back, those same seats are now £45 each

And just after posting, another set of tickets were released. I managed to get Stalls Row T (nowhere near as good as row AZ from first time around, but at least I'm in). So I shall report back!

The same thing happened to me on Tuesday with anything goes. 2 great stalls seats come up and then as you go to click them into the basket they go!! So annoying as there wasn’t anymore released. I did email todaytix, haven’t had a response. Sounds like there could be a glitch in the system! So fustrating!!!!

It’s the second time in a week I’ve had that glitch with TodayTix rush. The other show I wasn’t so fussed about thankfully and grabbed something else.
Then there was the Hairspray incident the week before where the rush seat I had had been sold to five people (not all through rush). The theatre sorted it well. But there are certainly a few bugs in the system!

Queued right up to Mamma Mia. They still have the cast from the last performance of Mamma Mia showing on the screen inside.
Some people have just joined the queue thinking this was The Lion King!

The guy next to me has just looked around bewildered and asked “Is that the end?”
I was tempted to say half-time based on his attire, but someone else got in first to say it was the interval.
He’s gone to the bar!
Late start, but we got in eventually. Very good so far and the crowd is more restrained than I’ve seen here before. We still got a phone going off, ice rattling, phone lights, bit of singing etc, but pretty good for a jukebox musical crowd.
There are even a few people wearing masks! They were doing proper Covid pass checks and much more thorough bag checks on the way in a long time!
A woman has just apologised to the audience around here for using the “C word” in response to Ike’s actions. I missed that completely!
The most excitement I’ve had during a theatre interval in a long time!

Yes, as oxydrive has mentioned, it was a very good show. And a very long show (10:35pm finish).
I had an awkward conversation with the football fan when he returned, a nice guy but I did rather simplify my responses (and had to avoid saying how much I paid for my ticket, as that doesn't go down well).
There was an irritating light that kept showing in the centre of the Stalls. For a long time, I thought it was someone filming, but it was probably a notetaker for the show.
What really surprised me is how few people seemed to know it was the first performance in 18 months. It was a slow standing ovation and crowd held back their cheers. I always dislike the booing of Jimmy Kasango (Ike).
Aisha Jawando was an absolute powerhouse as Tina Turner. The best I've heard anyone sing these songs (but it is only the third time I've seen the musical and the first time in about 2 years - I'd forgotten a lot of the details). At the end of the show, she (and Jimmy) were presented with flowers and she got quite emotional in her speech, which is quite understandable.
(just checked my comments from the last time I saw the show and I also saw Aisha last time, but then she was the alternate - I also see I rated her very highly then, but she is even better now)
Although I was at the back of the Stalls, the view is clear and the you don't miss anything on the stage despite the overhang from the Dress Circle. I'd prefer to sit near the front, but it was worth sitting there to be at the first performance (even if it is was not as magical as some). The cast really slipped back into their roles as if they had never been away. I think there have been some changes so it must have been the debut for some people too.
This isn't the musical people expect. A lot of people expect a concert where they can drink, sing and dance along. It is actually a rather horrific story about a whole community. Tina herself gets redemption, but you have to feel for all the others who suffered through it and never got theirs. It is very different to most jukebox musicals. If this was simply a musical without Tina's songs behind it, it would attract a different audience and I'm sure we'd think about it in a different way. This all just goes to show that life is stranger than fiction. With the right cast and audience, there's a gem of a show here.

Just listed a ticket to giveaway for this for Thursday (23rd) matinee on the notice board. A good opportunity if someone wants to see the show but not spend money on it.

Can someone tell me who played Tina tonight please? Judging by the photos in the programme, I would say it was probably Chanel Haynes rather than Aisha Jawando. Whoever it was didn't just play Tina, she became Tina. Quite an incredible performance.
I have been trying to see this show for nearly two years, and tonight's was my first booking that survived Covid cancellations. I was originally booked on front row AY, but that was removed at some point, even though there is plenty of room for it, presumably to put some distance between maskless audience members and the cast. I was moved back to row A, which I was told was the new front row, but that was either wrong or subsequently changed, as AZ now holds that rank. AZ is definitely the row to go for, offering a superb view of the low stage and two metres of leg room.
I thought the storybook weak, overly sanitised and consisting mainly of caricatures rather than characters. What I liked a lot was the set and lighting designs, the music, and the performance of the lead.
Four stars.
Act 1: 19:03-20:19 Act 2: 20:43-21:55 (Scheduled thirty minutes earlier than normal tonight.)
P.S. Most people wore masks. There was an excellent pre-show announcement which, amongst other things, politely but firmly asked people not to join in with singing.

Can someone tell me who played Tina tonight please? Judging by the photos in the programme, I would say it was probably Chanel Haynes rather than Aisha Jawando. Looks like it was Chanel, she posted on Instagram a few days ago saying she is due to be on as Tina on Monday evening. I also had the pleasure of seeing Chanel as Tina back in November and she was flawless, a superb performance! I would go as far as saying Tina was the best show I saw last year. I’ve never seen acting at that level in a musical before, Chanel is stunning as Tina Turner. Thank you for solving the seating mystery too! I booked via TodayTix when I went and was allocated AZ. After looking on the theatres website I assumed this was not the front row (due to the seating map showing it was not) so was very shocked to arrive and find out it was!
