Remember how exactly a year ago we shouldn’t read independent bloggers because they were destroying proper criticism?
I guess that doesn’t count for some people (yes honey we have the receipts...)
Anyway Darlings, my blog has been a “destination” for years 😉
I do admire the level of journalistic spin involved in this departure letter. One might say it’s the only piece of actual journalism in years...

Christ, Shenton is self-centred (see his Twitter feed). Most recently he has been posting on how his own mental health issues were reflected in his viewing of ‘The Son’, which make up his most recent posts. You can dislike his opinions, find him self serving and whatever (as I may) but that is off limits if that was what was referred to. In any case, all reviewers (professional, amateur, here or elsewhere) are self centred. Telling others your opinion can’t be anything but.

Mark Shenton has left the stage.
Okay although Mark may of came across as obnoxious and smug, out of all the theatre journalists he is the most passionate about the genre and clearly loves the form, he also has spoken very well in the past on LGBT+ and BAME issues and therefore is one of the most inclusive journalists.
So all in all, it’s just nice to wish him all the best.

But telling others how wonderful people think you are, or how wonderful they think your opinion is, is pretty self-centred in my book.

It's almost like...something Shenton would himself write?! but yes, I believe the comment was more a general observation on his twitter feed. Either way telling people what their opinion should be or what they can say isn't exactly promoting civilised discussion is it?

Hopefully it wasn’t, it may have been just badly timed. Reviewing is from a first person perspective but good reviewers are clear about that and caveat their views. I can imagine how easy it is to start believing in your own importance, though. Especially if you used to having a mouthpiece that reaches a large number of people.

I can’t stand the dude, and now he’s messing up my enjoyment of the Sunday Times 😐
