Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon will star in a revival of this at the Broadhurst Theatre from 4th May. Has anyone seen this before? Is it a well written play? It sounds like it's my kind of thing!

Blimey! Had to go dig out the programme. I saw Brian Cox and Dame Julie W at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter) circa 1989/90.
With theatre royalty like that what's not to like? Can't you just picture Cox and Walters delivering these lines:
Johnny: They're playing our song again. Frankie: Did they say what it was this time?
Yes, I'd say witty and great fun. I absolutely loved it. Broadway cast looks good too.

Yes it's not a bad play at all, there's a film version from the early 90's which expands it out a little bit but could give you an idea. The only trouble with it is always the casting, it's quite difficult to believe some of the people that have played the parts, as hopeless plain losers scared of love. Michelle Pfeiffer in the film 'uglied' up, quite unsuccessfully and I suspect Audra McDonald will face similar issues as she is quite luminous.
The last Broadway run had Edie Falco & Stanley Tucci and whilst neither of these have been painted with the ugly brush, was probably a better fit.

I saw Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci in an earlier production. Great performances -- I did not like the play. I think it's one of those plays that has juicy roles, which appeal to actors, but I don't think the play is that engaging. There are so many Terrence McNally plays that should be revived -- The Lisbon Traviata for one. I don't think Frankie and Johnny is among his best.

I'm curious about Julie W's accent, Tibidabo , if you can remember that far back. Was it her usual one, or did she make an effort for once?

It's Lady Tibidabo to you. You should know by now that you northerners all sound the same...🤪 Now. Which usual one did you mean? Her normal Brummy one? (I use the term 'normal' in a very loose sense in this case, you understand.) The Liverpudlian one she used for Educating Rita? The RP one she used for Pat and Margaret? Well, you get my drift. You go for our national treasure Dame Jules and I'm comin' right backatcha! And no, of course I can't remember. I only remember that she was a whole life-sized bafta better than Michelle Pfeiffer who was totally miscast, as already mentioned above.

Such a wide range. A total of...three, including her own, and the one where she trained.
Dame J needs to get a couple of Godber's under her belt before I decide if she is indeed a national treasure! 🙂
