Saw it on Saturday and loved it. Hadn’t appreciated that John Light had missed performances but I did wonder why his character was using a crutch.

Going Saturday, two separate injuries is beyond unlucky! Wondered why it hadnt been reviewed yet.

Fascinating use of voice there, in that Everett elbowed Light, but it was Light who hurt his own eye, apparently...

Uncle Vanya
An extremely dark Vanya, could not help but be overwhelmed by the underlying resentments and the staleness of the lives not lived that pervaded the estate awakened by the prodigals return.
Everett infuses Vanya with a simmering rage which initially makes it difficult to engage with the character and can initially make it feel as if he is miscast, only by the end I totally felt his pain as he muses over his remaining years and the acceptance of his lost life. There was something certainly different in his characterisation which is difficult at the moment to pinpoint.
Katherine Parkinson the actor initially dominated Sonya the character and it was only after the interval that she came into her own, used to seeing her as a strong central character it was difficult on my part to see her as the plain spinster whose only redeeming feature is her hair, but she too had won me over as she and Vanya settled in to the ennui of estate management.
Of the others the Doctor is the strongest and really appreciated the time John Light was on stage even though at times he lost his fight with his walking stick, as usual the Professor was a one dimensional character and with Yelena the emptiness of her own life and the impact she has on everyone else is so underplayed that I could not feel or even appreciate her pain and emptiness as she was refused her release at the piano.
Different in an indeterminable way, the most you can ask for a perennial classic, another strong production at one of my favourite regional Theatres.

Just out from the matinee, lots of cuts, only two hours not including interval. Largely playing the comedic aspects of the play. Everett better than i thought he would be. He is physically big so was able to slouch and emphasise Vanya's despair. Parkinsoon v good. Light not so good, didnt help with the granny specs and stick, which aged him. Hilarious eavesdropping at the interval, with two posh mature ladies(typical Bath mat crowd!) discussing Everett and one expressing genuine astonishment when her friend told he he was playing Vanya!!! Amazes me people come to a performance totally blind, i just dont get it. Will be interesting to compare this with the promised WE production early next year. Certainly Toby Jones and RE couldn't look any different.

A couple behind me at the interval Her: you didn’t tell me it was going to be so dull, nothing has happened Him:you knew it was Chekhov Her: yes but I thought something might have happened. Will it be like this for the rest of the play? Him: sigh. We don't have to stay Her: oh no, we can’t leave, I’m not moaning but I don't think it’s as good as what they usually put on here... Him: *long silence* what are we having for tea later?

Saw The Argument tonight at TRB. A really nice hour spent watching this. Wasn’t blown away, had a few giggles and loved the set.
