Ooh I hadn't heard about this until now, this looks right up my street. Funnily enough I was thinking of the "All That Jazz" movie earlier this week after getting the Chazz Busby character in "The Simpsons - Tapped Out" game. He looks familiar...

The Wasson book is being reissued in April and it has a strapline 'Now a major BBC drama from the creator of Hamilton'...so it looks promising that we'll see it here at some point.

I loved that show, it was on in 2000 just a few years after the CHICAGO revival had opened. I spent a lot of money on repeat viewings of both that year!
The DVD of the Broadway production is lovely to watch, but I remember the UK cast being spectacular. Most of them had come straight from CHICAGO to Fosse, if memory serves me correctly.

Did a coach trip to it and everyone in our party was completely (razzle) dazzled by it.Instant standing ovation! A fabulous show that should have run and run.

I watched episode 1 this evening. I am not sure what to think.
It has high production values and has lots of lovely details for MT geeks to obsess over. But the structure is perhaps a bit over complicated. Performances are decent - though it is quite hard to work out why people find Bob so attractive. Comb-overs just don't do it for me...
I will probably give episode 2 a try - but I wasn't immediately gripped. Not deterred from giving it a second go - but it wasn't such as I felt bereft at not being able to immediately binge watch the next.

I thought they did a good job at setting everything up in ep1 oxfordsimon, agree that it wasn't overly gripping in a 'binge-worthy' sense. Correct me if I'm wrong but I have the impression that in the 50's/60's attraction was driven less by physical appearance than it is these days. Interested in what makes you say the structure is possibly over complicated?

You beat me to it oxfordsimon, I also watched it yesterday evening and came here to say almost exactly the same as you! I was left with an overwhelming feeling of 'meh'. I will also give the second episode a go, as very often establishing episodes are a tough watch. Certainly for me all the time jumping got on my nerves and didn't seem to be adding anything but confusion, what year are we now??
{Spoiler - click to view} I also found it really jarring when Bob Fosse said he was casting Liza Minnelli in Cabaret and Gwen Verdon responded with 'can she act?'. Liza had already won a Tony and turned in three highly praised film performances, one of which got her an Oscar nomination. Of course Verdon may well have said it but it felt wrong to me and as if they were trying to stir up something. Just my thoughts

Really liked the first episode, touches of ‘All That Jazz’ in terms of its structuring, the playing with time makes it more of a memory play and the gut punch of seeing them age and youthen adds poignancy.
My main reason for commenting, though, is Michelle Williams as Gwen Verdon, she’s just incredible. Not only has she got Verdon’s look, mannerisms and (especially) her smile, she also has that inner glow that she had. There were a few moments where Found myself becoming very emotional watching her.
I’m wondering what they will cover stage wise, Chicago, definitely, with both their involvement. Pippin? Big Deal? Not sure we’ll go back to Damn Yankees and other earlier shows though. Added musical fan bonus too, for the passing references to Do I Hear a Waltz and Company.

I realise they are going for a warts an' all type presentation of flaws - but I just didn't get why someone who didn't know him would immediately be attracted. The structure - the 'to go' (or was it 'left') time flags felt more of a contrived device than anything else. I quite liked the time slips back to his childhood but it wasn't immediately clear what was going on. I think a casual viewer would find these things off-putting rather than engaging. A quick google helped me fill in some of my missing knowledge. I liked seeing his process and the fault lines in his relationship with Gwen.

Watched the second episode last night and I think it was much better, don't know why as it still jumped about in time a bit. It focussed more on Gwen Verdon I felt and Michelle Williams is , as always, very good so that may have helped. Bob Fosse really was a POS in his personal life though. Neither the Sam Rockwell characterisation or what I've seen of Fosse in 'real life' so to speak give any clue as to why he got away with it.
Quite looking forward to the rest of it now

Quite a heavy one this week I felt, with a continued focus on Gwen's plight.

Anyone know any more about the BBC scheduling for this? Based on how long it took them to get around to showing both Feud and Pose, I wouldn't expect this anytime soon unfortunately.

Anyone know any more about the BBC scheduling for this? Just saw an advert for it (and other shows coming to bbc2) and it said ‘this summer’ so not too long to wait.

Well I've watched it all now and it certainly is an excellent series once you get past the time jumping in Episode 1, it settles into a more traditional narrative, albeit with flashbacks. The acting is all round excellent with the main focus on the two leads obviously. I still can't get past how utterly vile Bob Fosse was, or is portrayed as in this, although I felt as the series wore on they were less kind to Gwen Verdon too. I didn't know them and others' memories of them now are filtered through the glass of time and what is most advantageous to the teller shall we say. I haven't seen 'All That Jazz' for years and it makes me want to revisit it and possibly read the book the series is based om, once I get through the daunting pile by my bed.
Highly recommended when it is available for all, just a shame that they take so long to show some series.
