No disrespect to Lily though, I have enjoyed her on interviews and Cinderella, but is she really that famous yet to merit an automatic nomination? Id say yes. She's been in films worldwide and Downtown Abbey which is one of the most famous TV shows in the world! If she is good, I haven't seen it, then she should be nominated famous or not

She was good but nothing particularly spectacular. But then Juliet is a pretty grating role sometimes anyway.

I'd love a set and costume design after seeing Breakfast at Tiffany's, its a great design all round. A long shot but if they are going for a famous face to nab a nomination, I wouldn't mind it being Pixie. Very outside chance but still haha! I think Pixie should be nominated actually for her terrific skill with accents. She was so good she had about 4 of them on the go in the same performance when I saw her. Meryl Streep, Schmeryl Streep.

Decided to make a new list for the Olivier's 2017 nominees. This is purely in my opinion: Best New Musical: School of Rock (New London) The Girls (Phoenix) Dreamgirls (Savoy) Groundhog Day (Old Vic) Aladdin (Prince Edward) Best Musical Revival: Funny Girl (Savoy) Showboat (New London) JCS (Open Air) Sunset Boulevard (ENO)? Best Actress in a Musical: Sheridan Smith (Funny Girl) Glenn Close (SB) Amber Riley (Dreamgirls) Lucy St Louis (Motown) Beverley Knight (The Bodyguard)? Best Actor in a Musical: Cedric Neal (Motown) Declan Bennett (JCS) Andy Karl (Groundhog Day) Joe Aaron Reid (Dreamgirls) Best Play Revival The Deep Blue Sea (National) No Man's Land (Wyndhams) The Dresser (DOY) Romeo and Juliet (Garrick) Best New Play Harry Potter (Palace) Sunset at Villa (National) Yerma (Young Vic) Best Actor Timothy Spall (The Caretaker) Ian Mckellon/Patrick Steward (No Man's Land) Dominic Cooper (The Libertine) Reece Shearsmith (The Dresser) Best Actress Norma Dumezwemi (Harry Potter) Helen McCroy (Deep Blue Sea) Glenda Jackson (King Lear) Lily James (Romeo and Juliet) Billie Piper (Yerma) Best Actress in a supporting role in a musical: Marilyn Cutts (Funny Girl) Sandra Marvin (Showboat) Ibinabo Jack/Liisi LaFontaine (Dreamgirls) Best Actor in a supporting role in a musical: Darius Campbell (Funny Girl) Joel Montague (Funny Girl) Adam J Bernard/Tyrone Huntley Dreamgirls) Of course there's loads more transfers which will probably be announced before next Feb so loads more shows to be added. Also there's loads of casting to be announced (eg School of Rock, The Girls) so they'll probably be put in places. Please let me know your thoughts!

I get a distinct feeling The Girls is going to be the Mrs. Henderson Presents slot this year. In both its awards and its length of run.

42nd Street won't be open in time. First preview is 20th March at the mo, but the nominations normally come out at the end of Feb (I think).

Still, we won't know until it's opened. But it definitely doesn't fill me with excitement personally. And I think that changing the name from the somewhat recognisable Calendar Girls (thanks in no small part to how often Film4 plays the movie!), to just The Girls will prove to be a mistake.

Surely Tyrone Huntley will get a nomination for JCS? And I'd love Rebecca Trehearn to get one for Showboat but don't know how likely that is.

Gina could well nab a nomination and I really hope she does too. I think it is going to be between her and Lucy from Motown to nab the final slot in a category with Sheridan, Amber and Glenn. If they go for 5 nominees like last year, both are no doubt in. If it is only 4, we shall see.

I agree, she was good and I enjoyed her performance but it's not likely one I'll particularly remember in 10 years. That said, she does as you say make a good job of what can be a really grating role in the wrong hands. Personally wouldn't put it in my top picks for awards though.

Showboat actually deserves a lot more than it will get, because it closes this week it won't get as much as it should sadly.
Groundhog Day: well, Andy Karl is pretty certain to get a nomination in my eye, and even a possible win. The design could also could garner a lot of praise from the awards. New Musical is a very likely nomination too.
A couple of curveballs, having seen the shows: I can see Breakfast at Tiffany's getting a design nomination for costume as the costumes are beautiful, especially Pixie's. But it won't pick up any others I wouldn't of thought. And I actually could see Jenna Russell gaining a nomination for Faustus. She was pretty fantastic. I would also give a nod to Kit Harington but I feel I would be in the minority on that part.

Groundhog in September. Voters are sent long-lists of all eligible nominees before casting their votes. Just because the show isn't open during nominations doesn't mean the show will be forgotten.

Those were limited runs though, and both are expected to transfer either to Broadway, West End or both. This was designed to be a long runner that didn't make it unfortunately past four/five months. It would of lost investors a lot of money. I wish it would get nominated and it will no doubt get a couple here or there. But I think, particularly the supporting cast, could get overshadowed by this. Also, it is a pretty packed list of nominees already, they could definitely be overshadowed by other performers.

If so, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope might just sneak into the nominations, I gather they got quite a bit of praise on Broadway. Unfortunately, I think you're right about Showboat. It should do ok because the Olivier nominations should be based on quality rather than commercial success, but with so many other strong productions running around the same time or opening soon there is a danger that it might get left behind.

In the Special Uncategorisable Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre category, I'd like to see:
Boy (Almeida) Open Court (Royal Court's Young Court / National Youth Theatre) We're Here Because We're Here (Birmingham Rep / NT) River Stage (The Glory / Latitude / Mayfest / Rambert / NT) This Place We Know (Bush / Uxbridge Road)

The trouble as well, with Showboat, is there are several supporting cast members who deserve a nomination. They can't all get them sadly.

It's a shame it hasn't appealed

I reckon that 5th slot will go to Gina Beck rather than Lucy St. Louis. I think they're both amazing, but Gina would have the edge for me. It's debatable whether Lucy's role is leading and Gina has a much larger part, so I think she'll get it.

Bear in mind though that with the Tony, the role Lucy plays was considered leading and Valisia was nominated alongside Stephanie J. Block, Patina Miller, Carolee Carmello and Laura Osnes.

Cedric and Lucy have the leading roles in my opinion.
