One of the Showstopper shows I saw last week I didn't enjoy that much, although it did have some amusing moments. I think it was because it ended up being about LGBTQ rights in 1960s America & that's not a subject I'm interested in. The rest of the audience gave it a standing ovation. However that's improv: some you love, some you don't.

One of the Showstopper shows I saw last week I didn't enjoy that much, although it did have some amusing moments. I think it was because it ended up being about LGBTQ rights in 1960s America & that's not a subject I'm interested in. The rest of the audience gave it a standing ovation. However that's improv: some you love, some you don't. One of the suggestions when I saw Showstopper a few years back was a musical about Greyhound Racing... I'm glad the cast ignored that suggestion otherwise it'd have been money wasted. It did however turn into a rather pedestrian Welsh Nightclub setting which hadn't much appeal to me either. |

On the other hand (no pun intended) - and I only saw the NT Live transmission so maybe not the full effect, but I really didn't like Hangman. |

Sweet Charity (so bored, to my shame I fell asleep!)
Little Shop of Horrors (what on earth was that all about?)
Company (agree with other people's views)
Blood Brothers (hated adults playing the kids)
I'm sure there will be more if I can dredge them from the depths of my memory!

I've learnt not to write off settings immediately as some that didn't sound that promising - Walthamstow market, an office party - have yielded great shows. I find how much I enjoy them depends very much on if I can care about the characters & their problems & relationships or not. longinthetooth I had a similar problem with Billy Elliot. I also hated all the kids swearing so much & only really liked 2 songs in the whole show. I only saw it a 2nd time because I really wanted to see a Mrs Wilkinson alt. who I'd seen in other shows. |

*tiptoes in* MADE IN DAGENHAM was dire. *tiptoes out* The audience steadfastly refusing to "Stand Up" despite repeated pleading from the cast was a damn site funnier than the actual onstage antics. I've never seen a cast read an audience so wrong, surely they had factored in some backup if the punters refused to stand but no, no they hadnt and poor old former Bond Girl Gemma Arterton looked daft making the gestures to a stoney faced crowd. Erm... I don’t think it was the intention that the audience had to *literally* stand up at all... Just like when they talk of the barricade in Les Mis, they don’t actually expect the audience to smash up their seats and pile them on top of each other. |

My list is easy: THE BOOK OF MORMON first and WICKED second! I didn't get much out of MATILDA either but I think that was due to very poor sound where I was sitting.

Dear Evan Hansen WITHOUT Ben Platt. Noah Galvin had just taken over the part and didn’t cut it at all. To me that exposed the somewhat thin quality of the actual show/mostly forgettable songs. Massive standing O from the rest of the audience at the end.
Kinky Boots - Completely unmoved by this and disappointed with the on the nose script, forgettable music and unimaginative choreography. The audience went crazy with joy at the finale.
Sunny Afternoon - Script so badly on the nose it might as well have been credited to Wikipedia. Songs fine, but I’d rather have listened to a CD of The Kinks performing them in my own living room. Everyone in the audience was up on their feet dancing ( cajoled by the cast to do so, which I found supremely annoying) except for us.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed that one, but I've never seen the Showstoppers do an LGBTQ one before except the odd gay affair so it might have been a novelty. The ones set in Ancient Rome / Greece / Egypt have me getting ready for a sleep before they've even started  |

I didn't like Matilda very much, but it was more the frustration at watching Tim Minchin's biting satire be delivered with no comedic timing by a bunch of 7 year olds.
Young Frankenstein and Spamalot were both about 5% as funny as the rest of the audience seemed to think they were. Unfortunately for both I was sat in the front row so had to pretend to be finding it equally as funny as everyone else.
Going to rock the boat here and say that School of Rock is actually my favourite Lloyd-Webber show. The plot is nonsense but it's great fun and it's the only show I've ever seen with kids in where I haven't wanted to strangle them all.

I saw it when it originally opened and again at the Palladium. The first was amazing. I managed not to walk out of the second by nodding off. |

And can I turn this on its head? I LOVED Pippin at the Menier (saw it three times) but was obviously swimming against the tide as tickets were half price very early on.

Someone mentioned Billy Elliott earlier on and I had forgotten about it.
It was one of those musicals, Lion King included, that I wanted to see but not in my must see list so never actually got around to seeing it. Then recently it was shown on TV and have to say it really bored me. I think I even fast forwarded a couple of bits. Glad I didn't pay to see it.
Also went to see The Fantastics when it was in London a few years ago. I had read about it being the longest Broadway show etc so thought it must be something special but it wasn't and I just found it very odd indeed. Even Clive Rowe couldn't save it for me.

I guess it all depends on what one is/isn't interested in! |
