I agree with the poster upthread that she is very charismatic on stage and that this compensated for a voice which isn’t that remarkable. Given that this is sung through I might be concerned. Not that it will make any difference, she’ll sell loads of tix. I watched the first 10 mins of the Donny Osmond version the other day on Netflix. I’m afraid I couldn’t get any further than that 😐
Agree totally. And there are PLENTLY of of other musical theatre greats who don't have the belting voices that many MT fans seem to see as the priority above all else in a stage performer.
Many of our faves who perform in Sondheim shows are actors who can sing and/or have massive presence and charisma that make them electric on stage. I think Sherrers is one of them!
All this fetishising of having to sing a score as written or to the benchmark of a certain performer from yesteryear is so restricting and lacks imagination.
LOL - certainly the debate does seem to have people in two camps of perfect singers vs massive presence - I mean in an ideal world the lead would have both. And in fairness I think it does depend on the style of writing - ALW scores I just think suit singers over actors IF you had to choose. I do recognise that we can't have a carbon copy of Linzi though and that we do have to move on. I guess for me personally, a slightly frustrating thing is that as celebrity culture has grown over the last 20 years it has become more and more acceptable to have less well trained/gifted singers leading musicals. Which is a shame. But times change and clearly not everyone thinks like that. And then there is a whole other conversation about shows needing a "name" these days. Is a musical not enough of a draw in it's own right? What I will say is I had lunch with two non musical obsessed mates today - they both said that since Sheridan's announcement they would like to see this. They weren't interested before! No denying she has the ability to get bums on seats.

No denying she has the ability to get bums on seats. I’m in the camp of “it depends which musical it is”. There’s some musicals I don’t think Sheridan should touch, but this one isn’t one of them. The new-ish culture of stunt casting celebrities does bother me to an extent, because I really dislike seeing someone with limited vocal abilities mugging their way through a musical score lol, but I also understand that the times have changed and it’s a business at the end of the day. I don’t think Sheridan’s in that celebrity stunt cast bracket btw, because I do think she is a fab performer, even if I don’t think her voice is super strong. I also think you need to factor in people’s perceptions of what a good or bad singer is. A lot of the people who post here are MT enthusiasts and purists and so of course gonna have really strong opinions on vocal prowess, stage presence etc, but I think most of the general theatre going public will probably have lower expectations in that respect, or at least maybe slightly lower standards.

I'm surprised that people are a bit sniffy that Sheridan Smith might not match Linzi Hateley's vocals, people were perfectly happy with her murdering the 'Funny Girl' score and coming nowhere close to Barbra and Babs is on a higher scale than Linzi.

I decided not to wait for the Joseph announcement and book for this as I want a decent seat (not premium) and have grabbed a centre stalls seat for an early preview. The seat had a little "i" on it and said wider then normal seat. So will be interesting to see what that will be like.

Yes big names have played the title role but there have been some other not so well known Josephs. I know people don't like the touring Kenwright version but it has produced some cracking Josephs - Graeme Smith, Richard Swerrun, David Anthony - and the best ever Narrator Niki Ankara.

I thought the touring version with Joe Mcelderry was fun but other versions I've seen with Keith and Craig as Joseph were pretty woeful and instantly forgettable.

If Sheridan is out, you can get your money back then as she’s over the title. I don't think that's the case in the UK. Glenn Close's name was above the title in Sunset Boulevard at the Coliseum and if I'm not wrong, refunds weren't given when she was off sick.

The conclusion is nearly always the same. People like different things, they will argue their favourite over the other and come up with reasons why. It seems like (well me anyway) we are learning that its the how we discuss things that needs our true attention, not whatever ‘clever clever reason why’ that we have.

It's not technically the case on Broadway either, that the absence of the above-the-title star = guaranteed refund. If it were, producers would save themselves a ton of hassle by the simple loophole of never advertising a performer above the title of the show. Yes, you often *can* get a refund if the above-the-title star is absent, but it's simple good will, not The Law.

I’ve gotten refunds before both in the West End and Broadway when someone is over the title. I think it has to do with the specific show. I usually would exchange for another date instead of getting money back though.

Yes, I imagine it's at the discretion of the producers. But given that tickets have been on sale for months, without Sheridan's name attached, I suspect they will not adopt this practice here.

I'm not saying it with any disrespect to Sheridan - the same I would say about any other performer whose name is "above the title". I think it's a valid discussion when star casting is involved. But you're right, let's get back to discussing if she'll be any good or not!
