Groan 🙄, some of us do want - and pay - to see the talent that a show’s sold on. Of course it’s our business if we’ve forked out a fortune on tkts, trains etc. Sickness is sickness and can’t be helped, but wanting to know why an advertised star is repeatedly off is very much the paying public’s business!. Don’t advertise and try to sell tkts off the back of a ‘name’ if you don’t want people to get disgruntled when they’re off. But the matinee today was always meant to be a Linzi show, in other words Alexandra's scheduled time off. Linzi is ill so the understudy is on. There is no issue to complain about. But anyway, no, you have no right to invade anyone's privacy by demanding information you aren't entitled to, and you pay for the show not the cast. We don't do above the title billing status here the same way Broadway does, never have.

Why someone is unable to do their job is between them and their employer, no one else. Whether someone is ill, stressed, has family or other issues, is personal and we have no right to demand anyone share personal information. Isn't life tough enough at the moment without trying to hold people to account for every little thing? Linzi has been gracious to admit she has a cold, and even apologise, none of which she HAS to do. It's none of our business what's wrong with her and nothing she needs to apologise for. We all want to see certain performers but things happen. I'm booked to see Linzi on sat night but if she's off, she's off and that's it! I'll enjoy it regardless cos it's Joseph!

You have zero reasons to be told anything about anything or anyone.

At least the show is still going ahead which to me is more important than one of the leads being absent.

Personally, I think a customer should be able to get an exchange or refund if any performer that they want to see isn't on for their booked performance. It's almost false advertising and the customer comes first, right? Most people won't mind and won't be bothered, but the option should be there. Especially when it's a stunt casting or big name casting because these tickets are often eye-wateringly pricey and people travel from far and wide to see theatre. The fact that the customer just has to "suck it up" is rubbish and a little aggressive. Yes, I know all about the small print, I just think things should be different.

If someone is off then they are entitled to their privacy of course but the line gets blurred when the person off is tweeting about it implying there is something more going on. Of course people are going to speculate then.

Why should they get a refund if a certain performer is off? When you buy a show ticket your contract is for a performance of that show so as long as they perform the show to a reasonable standard, contract fulfilled. If they introduced that rule it would be absolute chaos. And imagine an understudy playing to a reduced crowd cos a lot ppl had had a refund! How disheartening! Understudies are often just as good as the leads just not as experienced or famous, and you can see some awesome performances when understudies are on. Sometimes, you go to see a performer, and they are off for reasons they don’t have to disclose, so you can either put on your big girl/boy pants, get over it and enjoy the show or sulk about it. I know which one I choose. What you can’t do is expect producers to refund you cos they have understudies so the show can go on.!

Judging by a tweet from Jack tonight, there was some crazy & quite frankly alarming behaviour from some of the audience after the show .
What is with some people , like what goes through their non existent brain cells, to even think about doing that

It does happen though - when Dove Cameron wasn't able to perform in Light In The Piazza in 2019 and Molly Lynch went on for her, the Royal Festival Hall (wrongly) tweeted that customers could get a refund/transfer if they wanted. There was a backlash and they ended up apologising on Twitter. Yes life happens but you can understand some irritation when a 'name' you're looking forward to seeing doesn't perform. But no, they don't owe you an explanation as to why they're not performing, just be gracious and accept that's the way life goes sometimes. Sometimes the understudies are amazing and you end up becoming a fan of someone you'd never even heard of.

Sometimes the understudies are amazing and you end up becoming a fan of someone you'd never even heard of. I remember this happening at the Southbank. I thought it was incredibly admirable of them and the right thing to do. It shows that the producers aren't greedy, quite frankly. Sure, they don't owe the audience an apology but why should the onus be on the customer? It is just the producers wanting to keep their pockets lined. I haven't said that understudies are inferior or anything of the sort. Not everyone would get a refund or exchange but the option should be there. It's good customer service. I can imagine it puts alot of people off booking theatre tickets if it's happened to them in the past. Let's not forget how expensive these tickets can be.

I'm bemused by this idea that producers are lining their own pockets. It's a business, not a charity and I think people are forgetting that actors are not robots who have off days and shock horror, get ill.

Is it true that used to be a ‘rule’ (probably convention l would be a proper word) on Broadway that if the absentees name was over the title of the show in marketing you could get a refund, but not otherwise? I suspect an urban legend, but would be an interesting criteria!

I suspect an urban legend, but would be an interesting criteria! Yes, you’re paying for the show, not the star. But the prices being paid are often inflated to reflect the presence of said star. Here’s a thread on it from back in 2018. An interesting conversation: theatreboard.co.uk/thread/4935/west-end-theatre-understudy-refunds

Sometimes the understudies are amazing and you end up becoming a fan of someone you'd never even heard of. I went to see this as it was another one to tick off my list. Wasn’t really aware who Dove Cameron and even seeing the signs I didn’t twig she was the one off as I didn’t know the characters names! (I love going in blind sometimes). It was a tricky one as more of the audience than normal were there for her and some left when the announcement was put out in the auditorium. Molly was brilliant of course! there are many shows I want to see the covers for, not for dislike of the lead but because I’ve seen them in something else or just want to see a slightly different spin. My big pet peeve is shows with no cast board or signs for covers! (Especially if you have the audacity to sit in the upper circle) Back to Joseph, I like Alex and I like Linzi, but which is better? Only one way to find out …

FIGHT!!!
*ahem*
Or watch them both….
Just had an immature giggle at the picture in my head of Alexandra and Linzi having a fight on the palladium stage with giant inflatable hammers!

Anyone managed to get day seats at the box office recently? Lost the lottery and there seems to be a fair bit of availability this weekend.

My comment was aimed at Cinderella.

I’m seeing this tomorrow, booked it ages ago and was quite lucky that it later turned out to be one of Linzi’s perfrmances. Obviously it can’t be helped that she’s not well, but still a little bit gutted she might not be on.

Bit disappointing but can’t be helped and I’m sure she’s as gutted as the rest of us but one of those things and at least we still get to see an amazing show and see Rochelle who is meant to be excellent! Just send lots of get well vibes to her!
