It looks stunning. It’s is amazing how far CGI has come even in a decade.

James Earl Jones as Mufasa! Excellent! So glad he's reprising the role.

That was kinda the intention of my post @theatremonkey.com
Disney are going to be short of 'classics' to remake soon what with Aladdin, Mulan, Lion King all incoming following Jungle Book and Beauty & the Beast. Does that leave just Little Mermaid and Hercules?

Hunchback of Notre Dame would be amazing but I think it’d need to be closer to the novel similar to the stage adaptation If Dumbo does well, I could see them remaking Bambi

Forgot Dumbo was in production also. Hunchback would be great.

Funny you should say that. I was wondering how they would do "Cats" as an animation. Now I get it. And that trailer for Lion King is indeed stunning. I never liked the animated movie much, but this I may make an effort to see. Except that for Cats they have to dance. A lot. Having a cat represented by a human who is dancing is fine (if you like that sort of thing) but having a cat that looks like a real cat dancing like a human is just bizarre and wrong. No doubt for this reason the animals in the 2016 Jungle Book don’t dance. I can’t see Cats working at all unless I’ve totally misunderstood how they’re going to do it.

I think this trainer just looks AMAZING! I'm more excited for this than Dumbo.
if they can make then look this good, why not remake The Aristocats?

I thought they were doing a live action Lion King and I have ended up very confused by this trailer. I was expecting something more like a movie version of the play.
That said, I still think this looks good.

I have to admit the trailer left me cold - the original was my childhood favourite and I'm not sure it can be beaten. Nothing about that trailer made me want to see this remake.

It left me cold too - from this teaser, it looks like they’ve basically just re-created the original film shot-for-shot but using CGI instead of animation. I also don’t think ‘Live Action’ should be synonymous with ‘Motion Capture/CGI’ and it’s false advertising if they were saying it would be the former.

Yes, trailer looks great but I find it very odd this is being described as a "live action remake" when it's actually just a different form of animation!

I'm in the underwhelmed camp I'm afraid. It's ok until the characters come into it at the end and they (Rafiki, Simba) just don't realistic enough to be believable as anything other than cgi.
The originals visuals were more striking in that opening scene, the realism adds a slight drabness to it.
Not a fan that they've cut one of the best songs either.
agreed it shouldn't be advertised as live action as it's obviously not

I agree - it’s seriously unfair to the animators to describe it as live-action!
And I’m not sure I see the point in re-making it - from the trailer seemingly shot-for-shot! - in a different form of animation. Other than Disney making a tonne of money of course! (But haven’t they got enough?!)

I imagine it will include more songs, especially one or two newly written in order to make it eligable at the Oscars. They'd be crazy to not give Beyonce a big ballad.

Let's hope it does well and Disney can get on with remaking 'Basil the Great Mouse Detective'.

They've already announced the songs.
"There's going to be four of our songs in the film, from the original: 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight', 'Hakuna Matata', 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King' and 'Circle of Life'.
"And then there will be an end, closing song, and we've been speaking to Beyoncé's people and hopefully Tim and I and her can cook up something."

So the songs we all really wanna hear and a Beyonce number, fabulous!

I'm not sure if it's just me getting older but I really feel the heart has gone from Disney in the last few years. Their films used to always seem to punch above their weight - there were things going on below the surface, so I can watch the films I watched as a kid and pick up on serious themes, little details and darker undercurrents that were initially just on the periphery of consciousness and beyond my understanding.
Now it seems more like a corporate machine than ever, churning out endless unimaginative and sanitised remakes and sequels that just feel superficial and dull. This trailer looked like it was put together by an algorithm being fed marketing data. I'm looking forward to How to Train your Dragon 3 more than any of these soulless regurgitations.

I think the recent Disney animations are among the best work they've ever produced but I could really do without this remaking of films with CGI. When Disney embraced the new technology for films like Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen they created something beautiful and wonderful and original. This stuff is more of a technology sales pitch: "Hey, everyone. Isn't this so much better than a travelling matte? And just listen to what we can achieve with autotune!"
