Hello Everyone!
Wicked on Broadway is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary in a few days time and I thought it's time to discuss the Broadway show.
The show finally came out a new promo video with Jackie Burns and Amanda Jane Cooper after using the one with Stephanie J. Block for the past 12 years. I haven't seen her but I've heard Jessica Vosk is amazing and bringing new life into the show. The show has slowly turned into a family friendly show from the slightly dark show that opened in 2003.
The show constantly makes over a million a week and the capacity rarely goes under 90% meaning it is an official Broadway mainstay.
What are your thoughts on the Broadway show or its American tour.

I think Wicked is much more than a family friendly show and that's kind of what I dislike about the new trailer, that it gives me this family show vibe.

There is absolutely no reason why something like this would be shown on TV - we don't even get broadcasts of large anniversary concerts of West End productions (e.g. Les Mis 25th), so we're even less likely to get a Broadway one. I don't really see the point in making such a fuss of a 15th anniversary in any event, but there you go. |

Well I disagree. For NBC to have interternational bars on the show being seen online and on You Tube they know Wicked is an international hit in dozens of countries. Of COURSE they want to sell the rights to other networks around the world. That’s how the TV industry works - it’s all about ratings, sales and money.

The fact that they did a big thing for their 15th makes me wonder if they're not anticipating making it to their 20th (though maybe they're just banking on the movie to have opened by then).

Or their stirring up interest from non-Wicked fans or folks who are yet to see as a precursor to the film being made. |

Just watched this. Awful, just awful. The audience reactions seemed so fake and staged it made me cringe. I love Kristin but that performance of "Popular" was kind of annoying. Adele Dazeem did great with "Defying Gravity". Adam Lambert was the only guest who did a good job. And all those ex-Broadway Glindas and Elpahabi at the end... Random. Where are the legends? Where's Donna Vivino? Where's Sho Bean? And Rachel Tucker? And Willemijn? Megan Hilty?
ETA: oh, Vivino was there.

Conversely, I thought Kristin was great and it was Idina who was weak! She just can't hit those end notes very well these days. Certainly not with the assuredness that Rachel and others can. I thought Pentatonix did a great job as well. And Adam as you say. Ariana was mostly ok until she overdid the last 60 seconds and couldn't sustain the end note. And I agree on all the former cast members, it was a lovely gesture but I didn't know who any of them were! 😀

I saw bits and bobs of this and quickly realized that none of this is aimed for a 37 year old grown ass man, though it seemed completely adequate for the majority teenage audience who were taking selfies, screaming and crying for no apparent reason.
For Good looked messy and it looked like an award show for adult films and that all these ladies were participants in a certain adult scene.
They must have spent the budget on Idina, Kristen and Ariana because the For Good ladies had no wardrobe coordination to speak of.

I thought since the anniversary is over we can turn this into a discussion about the Broadway Run if, that is ok with everybody. Amanda Jane Cooper and Isabel Keating who play Glinda and Morrible are the next actors set to leave. Rumor has it that either Katie Rose Clarke is returning or Ali Ewoldt, (Who currently plays Christine in Phantom on Broadway) are next in line for the Bubble. Personally I hope it is Ali because Katie has been playing Glinda off and on since late 2007. I heard one rumor, so take it as a grain of salt that Broadway legend Nancy Opel is going to become Morrible but, I highly doubt it. It will probably either a return Morrible or one from the tour. This was a bit all over the place, especially as they didn't get Eden, Shoshana, Stephanie J. Block, Willemijn, Tucker, Ellis, Hilty, Katie Rose Clarke, Alli Mauzey or most of the people who went on to relative musical theatre stardom through the show to come and perform.
The combination of Wicked and Halloween was weird. Like they were trying to get it to appeal to a mainstream audience who don't really care about the show. The celebrities varied from okay to poor, the OTT riffing in some places just illustrated why pop stars shouldn't ever be cast in the show (I didn't know Adam Lambert had played Fiyero, he was probably the best of the bunch).
It was a nice idea to have Idina and Kristin present, but their small talk and transitions between songs were very awkward, maybe a little because they notoriously don't get on but also because both are actors first and foremost and don't have the rapport necessary to host something.
The audience was weird, it seemed to be full of people who liked the idea of Wicked but didn't really know a great deal about it as they freaked out over the most bizarre things.
All in all I'd rather they'd done something more low key designed just for musical theatre fans. Maybe they could have got the Elphabas and Glindas onstage at the Gershwin after the 15th anniversary performance to sing For Good? Feeling a bit meh over the whole thing.
