I didn’t realise how soon this is released, I wonder why Cameron and Disney thought that it was better to have Mary Poppins open in the west end to capitalise on the film, rather than allow Aladdin to remain despite this happening next year.

I’m guessing Mary is going to be a much bigger deal of a movie, and make everyone nostalgic for the first one. Anyway, I love Aladdin, but I’m not seeing this. Guy Ritchie has enough of my money from when Madge divorced him. Maybe I’ll lend a dvd version of a friend one day instead.

I'm far from a fan of the live action remakes Disney are pushing through - Beauty and the Beast in particular was complete trash - but even so I am flabbergasted at how bad the Will Smith Genie looks. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was seven years ago and set the standard for mocap/CGI characters, a standard that was blown apart by Thanos last year, and with the amount of money behind the studio and the amount it's pretty much guaranteed to make, there's absolutely no excuse.

If there's any consolation, the amount of Will Smith genie memes circulating online is incredible and worth a look if you want a laugh.
I don't plan on seeing this to be quite honest. It's not just Will Smith that's dodgy. Jafar's actor sounds pretty bad, too (in the trailer anyway).
Disney's mission to turn everything in their library into live-action is becoming ridiculous now. Nobody needs or wants these films. Have Disney really ran out of originality that they have to resort to this, or is it so they get more money by tugging at people's nostalgia? Both, I suspect.

There's also a whacking great loophole in WGA rules that means the writers of the original animated film don’t need to be paid anything if their script is used for a live-action remake, if I understand correctly. The screenwriters for BATB and Aladdin both confirmed.

I have two questions, one of which can be answered by Google:
1) Who is that playing Jafar?
(A Dutch-Tunisian guy called Marwan Kenzari.)
2) Why can't he act?
(He's pretty hot tho, I will concede that.)
These Disney remakes take all the fun out of the bad guys - Idris Elba's Shere Khan was completely toothless and sounded pretty hilarious, and now this. NGL angular camp eyeliner'd Jafar was one of my heroes as a young girl, and I am NOT HAPPY.

Well what a surprise this movie turned out to be. Funny, romantic and a lot of fun. It’s a shame that the marketing has let the film down as there’s a lot to like here. I saw a clip of the Prince Ali sequence last week and thought it looked terrible but in the context of the movie it was an absolute joy.
I know some people have reservations about Will Smith and I’m still not sure if I’m on board with his version of Friend Like Me but he really did a great job as the Genie in this film. He really did make it his own and provided a lot of laughs and a lot of heart.
If you had doubts about this movie then all I can say is to give it a chance. I’m really looking forward to seeing it again.

I saw a preview screening last week and enjoyed it so much that I'm dragging my family to see it on the weekend.
When it comes to beloved Disney animated movies, Aladdin has always stood out from the crowd for me (alongside a couple of others eg. Mulan and The Little Mermaid) with its solid story, gorgeous songs, and a sprinkling of that unmistakable Disney magic. And in this live action remake, Guy Ritchie has added in fast paced action, thrills and guts, elevating it way beyond it's live action remake predecessors (the less said about the Beauty and the Beast remake the better imo - having seen that I tempered my expectations for this movie MASSIVELY, and was subsequently REALLY impressed with this one!)
Mena Massoud is a real diamond in the rough as Aladdin- everyone's favourite rags to riches Prince - sharing the screen with Naomi Scott as Jasmine. For me they nailed their characterisation, and yep, their singing was also really lovely. The A Whole New World scene made me tear up, and as the audio is now on Disney's YouTube chanel I've listened to it a bunch of times over.
I'm still not really a fan of the idea of remaking all of Disney's iconic animations, but if they MUST do it then this is the way to go.

The original animated film is possibly my favourite thing of all time, and I don't think it's even about nostalgia because I've seemed to like it more and more as I get older.
I appreciated that Princess Jasmine is actually a character, the seeds were there in the animated filmed but I'm glad they decided to have her take a more active role. Also loved the lavish costumes and sets, everything was so colourful and bright. It also felt a little Bollywood and I'm glad they threw in a bit more culture. With Jasmine's development into an actual character I was glad with the tweaks for the ending. The new orchestrations for the songs gave me chills.
However, it wasn't the film I love, which I wasn't expecting it to be. I didn't love Aladdin's characterisation to me it felt like setting the Genie free came out of nowhere and was Jafar even a villain, he was bored and creepy not villainous. Didn't love the extra politics in there I can't lie.
It doesn't matter how many times I see this in any form, the animated film, the musical or this. I will always cry at the first chords of a A Whole New World, that magic carpet sequence is so special to me.

A lot of people have had things to say about Will Smith but I think you'd be hard pushed to find an actor with his showmanship who could pull this off. It's hard to compete with a childhood favourite, especially one who's dead. I think he did a fine job.
I saw it yesterday and it met my expectations, it's obviously not the animation we know and love but enjoyable. I agree that Jafar wasn't nearly scary enough, especially when he was hatless! Jasmine was great, made for 2019.

So I went in to this full expecting to hate it and want to leave... and that didn’t happen!
I thought it was fine, but nothing more. Visually, yes it’s impressive and grand. But it felt 30 minutes too long (ie the stuff they chose to include to bulk it out was unnecessary and shows just how good and streamlined the original is)
Thought the cast was fine - Will Smith wasn’t as awful as I’d thought he’d be, but you are never going to match Robin Williams and he very much felt inferior to what we know the genie can be!
I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. Probably give it a generous 3 stars.
