I did it for the in-laws online, through ATG. How do you do it online if you don't mind me asking? I know you have to collect at box office but when I try booking for a midweek show online there is no option for £20 off? Thanks for the help Just looking st the website I thought it was an option when selecting your own seats. We must have booked over the phone, apologies.

All fair enough reasons. I was wary way back when it was announced but loved what I saw. Also, it's a really British musical which we're missing in London at the moment! Great story with great actresses - would give it a go if you can hopefully you would like it

Plus, on Let It Shine the other evening Gary Barlow pointed out he hated "that musical theatre sound" or something to that effect. He did not like "musical theatre" singing and did not want it in the show. He was looking for more of a pop voice. Except of course he is casting a theatre musical!!!! I was bewildered!

Seen some strange comments on that show. I think it was Dannii who said someone was too musical theatre the other week. Staying on topic though the fact that its been done to death is another of the things that puts me off. If this is still on by summer 2018 i will be stunned

Perhaps more like Summer 2017? It's not a big theatre and if the running costs are not too high (don't know the size of the company or band etc.) it might have a reasonable run. Even good reviews cannot guarantee a long run these days if the show simply does not appeal.

I was trying to be generous. The phoenix is a bit of a graveyard though.

Think it works really well as a musical. Big structural change from the play and it even includes a few teenagers (who get some of the best lines).
The songs are accessible and catchy and Act 2 is hilarious. Great to see a new British musical!

I am not a barlow or take that fan. I just love musicals. I am going to see this one this friday. I hope I will have a great evening and will post my remarks afterwards.

I was trying to be generous. The phoenix is a bit of a graveyard though. Because Blood Brothers did sooooo badly there!! The theatre isn't an issue - it's the fact that is has had dreary shows like Once and Bend it like Beckham since. Throw in Mary Poppins, Carrie, Aida or something GOOD and the theatre would be fine.

I loved Once. It's a shame to see the Phoenix reduced from that to being plastered in thousands of sunflowers for a story that didn't need another re-telling. Take away the manic Gary Barlow fans who will lap up his bland, generic score and it's hard to see who The Girls would appeal to. I certainly can't recall ever feeling such apathy and indifference towards a new musical before.

sorry, have you actually seen the show? Regrettably, yes. At Leeds Grand. Ditto up north. It's a story we've all seen before with bland music. Still I'm seeing it again in a few weeks again so I hope they have made positive changes. The show isn't bad, it's sweet but I just wish they had hired a different composer.

The theatre isn't an issue - it's the fact that is has had dreary shows like Once and Bend it like Beckham since. Throw in Mary Poppins, Carrie, Aida or something GOOD and the theatre would be fine. Once had a decent run, 2 years. It's biggest initial problem was being crushed by Mormon's massive opening marketing drive, that swamped everything else that season. The show itself gathered a lot of fans. I know it divided opinion on here, but I thought it was one of the greatest musicals I've ever seen. Beckham wasn't a bad night out, I thought, just didn't have enough compelling reasons to see it again, perhaps. Big cast too, so expensive to run in a fairly small house. Artistically, not a huge failure, I'd say. I honestly don't think Carrie would run commercially (it wasn't full even at Southwark). Mary and Aida couldn't fit into that theatre. I think footfall contributes location wise. Once had a lot of heart and fans who would make repeat visits. Im not convinced The Girls will have that or an appeal to the tourist market

I'm getting the distinct impression that this thread is becoming obsolete for those of us who don't want to repeatedly say why it won't work.
It's no longer a balanced discussion when the same people repeatedly make the same observations.

Hang on though, no-one has tried to silence the posters who have repeatedly "promoted" this show have they? A small number of people have seen it and are in a position to comment. People who haven't seen it are entitled to say why it does or doesn't appeal. This isn't a "fan" thread.

At the risk of incurring anyone's wrath, I walked past the Pheonix on Saturday and was really pleased that it's now more visible and I liked the sunflowers.
On my first trip to the Phoenix years ago to see Blood Brothers, I had real difficulty finding the theatre as it had such a small sign and the frontage is on a narrow side street. I had passed it loads of times and had never realised a theatre was there and I thought it looked dark and sad.
Thanks to the sunflowers, it's obviously a theatre now. And the more shows that are successful (whether they are to my taste or not) the better theatre-land does in general. It's the people who come to London for a day to see a show who keep the West End going I'd imagine, not regulars like us.
It's sad to see dark theatres or theatres struggling because no-one knows they're there (like Charing Cross until recently), so the more visible the better.
Not sure if I'll go and see The Girls, but will wait for reviews first.
