I wouldn't have thought costs would be that high? Even though the Adelphi is not a small house. There aren't many people in the cast, the band are tiny and there are no massive set pieces/automation that require ridiculous machinery or maintenance - plus the number of crew backstage is also pretty small for a West End show, looking in the programme. I think part of the reason it's run so long on Broadway even with inconsistent audience numbers is that it must still make a reasonable profit without the constant needs for 90%+ attendance.

Wow that was incredible, my heart feels full!!
I sat B31 in stalls, you only miss one or two moments stage right but it’s a great seat (although i’ll Try B30 next time) as you have no one in front of you, leg room & you are so close but away from the high stage for this in AA!!
I am a big fan of the cast recording so I went in knowing the songs but not the narrative (well of course knowing songs gives you a steer, a soft place to land) and this is a great story that is relatable, simple and empowering!!
I thought Katherine was brilliant & so glad she has opened as ‘Jenna’ her ‘She Used to Be Mine’ you could have heard a pin drop, goosebumps!!
The cast are strong, great set with smooth transitions and I loved the choreography with baking!!
I welled up & tears!
I’m gutted they had sold out of lapel pins, oh well will have to return!!
A new favourite for me!!

Three actresses (all British) who would both sing and act the role of Jenna when KMP leaves: Rebecca Trehearn Laura Pitt-Pulford Joanna Woodward Joanna was pretty honest on Twitter on how much she wanted the role. Give her a shot. I was holding out for LP-P when the show was first announced. I love her, she had one of the strongest voices in The Light Princess and I've been obsessed with her ever since!!

A new favourite for me!! If there was a “perfect behaviour at a show” thread I’d have given you a mention as I was seat B30 last night. I nearly gave you a nudge towards the end as I could tell the sightlines from your seat you wouldn’t have seen young Lulu on the counter … (but did you find the woman the other side of me with her peanut M&M’s as annoying as I did)? I enjoyed the performances a lot. Love the music, KMP and DH’s duet You Matter To Me was a beautiful thing. Great comedy (a little over-egging by Jack McBrayer but his performance alone took the comedy to another level, lapped up by the audience). Really liked David Hunters performance. Marisha Wallace, what a voice, what a huge presence on stage she is. I thought KMP had a really lovely voice too. I’m not blown away by the show if I’m honest, I think it’s the Doctors adultery makes me feel icky, but it’s a 4* from me on performance level.

Aww thank you, I was enthralled throughout and had a few silent tears over the course of Act 2.
That’s sweet of you to say, the only moment I missed a beat from sideline was ‘Becky’ & ‘Karl’ moment at the start of Act 2, I couldn’t see them as they were total stage right but was all good apart from that.
So I had friends in Dress Circle (Trekkie Monster) so I went up to their bar in the internal & they told me they had some bad behaviour people in their section (I can report the offenders were far better in Act 2) they had a sweet rustler and a couple in front that talked to each other although Act 2 they were quiet and had a cry so they must have got enthralled too!! Oh I course reported to them of the perfect behaviour down in the stalls with my surroundings patrons but o did notice the woman bring M&Ms when they returned at the very last minute of the interval & I thought ‘oh no’ sorry if effected you but I couldn’t hear any rustling at all & had a perfect Act 2!

Yes to the Becky and Karl moment! I could only see Becky clearly (lordy lordy!). I thought the wheeling in of the small trolley and leaving it there at the side of the stage was odd too - blocked sightlines.

Maybe a silly question but would this have been eligible for the Olivier Awards this year, given that it hasn't officially opened?

Just wondering about The Olivier Awards next year. Who would be eligible for leading actress? KMP or whoever takes over? Or both?

.......I also think as well that Waitress was one of the first shows I've seen since CFA and CFA was one of the best experiences of my theatre going life so maybe anything that came quickly after that would have had an uphill struggle to impress me as much. After seeing Waitress on Monday night (already posted my review) I have been reflecting on the absolute buzz I felt after seeing Come From Away and how, after Waitress, I felt kinda "meh". I'm only now going back through this thread and reading other reviews, saw this and did a virtual high five.

It depends who the producers nominate, Mel C was somehow eligible and nominated for taking over in Blood Brothers. It's bloody weird.

Yes the Oliviers have often done strange things for replacements, but for a new production, the Olivier voters will attend around the same time as the press, which would make KMP the eligible one. If the producers (for some reason) wanted to get them back to rewatch it with KMP’s replacement, it would probably cost them money. In addition to which, they wouldn’t go to the extent of bringing (what they see as) a name over to not have her nominated for the Olivier. She could well be hoping for it, too. The Tonys have previously attempted a “Best performance in a recreated role” category, but it’s never worked out.

Also saw it this afternoon. Certainly the audience loved it. I was a bit more luke warm. A lovely way to pass an afternoon beyond question but it felt more like a US sitcom with tunes to me. I couldn’t go with with the themes at all. Maybe because I was distracted by the idea that it was too big a theatre. Having the band on stage just like CFA - is it economics? - suspends belief when played out on such a big stage. Had it somewhere more intimate like Southwark Playhouse I might have felt more included in what is clearly intended to be an empathetic shared experience. A couple of other similar traits to other new shows in town ... the diction on the big ballads was not good and I couldn’t make out the words at all. Belting out a big number is not much good if you don’t know what is being sung... and why another high stage?

It sounds like Come From Away actually make use of having the band on stage and they become part of the story but for Waitress they’re really just sort of there for the sake of it. I assume the Adelphi has quite a big pit so I guess a band of 5 down there would look quite comical anyway! I barely even noticed the band being there to be honest appart from when the solo guitarist came on in A Soft Place To Land and a few other instances, I guess I was just too engrossed in the story. The one thing I did think though was that it looked a bit messy the way the band just walk on at the beginning of I Didn’t Plan It instead of being there from the start of Act II, I just don’t think it looked right and actually took me out of the show for a split second.

When was the opening night? Or had it not opened yet? It feel like it's been in previews for a while now!

Katherine McPhee, she originated the role. It depends who the producers nominate, Mel C was somehow eligible and nominated for taking over in Blood Brothers. It's bloody weird. As recently as this decade they’ve had different people nominated in consecutive years for the same role. Kyle Scatliffe and Brandon Victor Dixon in 2014 and 2015 respectively and a few years before that was Ruthie Henshall & Maria Friedman both as Velma Kelly one year after the other. I’d love to know what the official rule is.

I assumed the band on stage was a musical choice- it suits Sara’s style and is essentially what she has on stage when performing. So I’ve always assumed they were going for a “indie pop rock” sound rather than “traditional musical theatre” and the band on stage was part of it (ya know like Rent did back in the day and countless others with the pop-rock sound)
