Do you think Jack McBrayer went in thinking I'm going to screw this up? Do you think the people booking to see Ashley will care that she's not the greatest singer?
Nope.

Indeed, but we have seen it so many times before! IF she is not up to the role (and it's a big IF as have seen performers slated on here and when seen them myself they have been absolutely fine) - then it is the producers who are 100% at fault.
As for your question what makes someone who is not up to a role accept it? Who knows as the human psyche is a complex thing but could be a any one (or combo of) - they are in denial and they do believe they can do it - they think they must be able to do it as the producers believe in them - they need the money/work/exposure - they think certain abilities out of dance/acting/singing will compensate for others - they think they can learn and improve in rehearsals. - they are surrounded by sycophants who repeatedly tell them they are amazing
These are all total guesses though and we will never know.
I really would urge people to reserve judgement until they have seen her though.

Whatever happens, and however good or bad she is, she has still added ‘West End Star’ to her cv. Job done I say...whilst a charming performance I was still a bit underwhelmed by Laura’s performance of WHSM vs the OBC recording.

For sure the whole situation hasn't helped Ashley, as having people basically expecting you to fail and ready to call you out the moment you put a foot wrong cannot do much good to your nerves. And yet... she must have been aware she was unfit and unprepared for this kind of job, right? I'll try to make it clearer with an example... Let's say that, a few years ago, you worked for some time at a small cafe which used to serve the typical brunch items, and enjoyed a certain success and popularity. Everybody loved to go there on a Sunday, although it was mostly because the owner made a really great bloody Mary and was charming AF, while you were mostly in the kitchen making scrambled eggs. Cue to today, you haven't worked as a cook in a while, yet for some reason you're offered to go work for a couple of months at a Michelin star restaurant, and of course you're going to have to deliver that kind of quality each night of the week. It also happens that the patrons have fallen in love with the delicacies the sous chef who's going to be off during that time would cook as specials. Would you really accept the job on a whim? What can ever make you think it'll all be just fine? You have to know from the start you're highly likely to screw things up! Trying to explain something Waitress related with an example that doesn't include pies?

Lots of seats left for tonight so I've just grabbed two tickets in stalls Row W. Last time I sat at the front of upper circle so hoping the view is ok! Looking forward to seeing the new cast for myself...

The general feeling in the building is that Ashley is a very nice person but dire in the role. She can’t sing and she can’t act. They are just hoping the show survives long enough for Laura Baldwin to resume the role. Truth is, it’s days are really numbered. There is so much bad feeling towards the show after the way the Producers treated LB. I’m gonna reserve judgement until I see her in the role. I’m sure / hope she’ll grow into it after a few performances, like all the cast have done. I want her and the show to succeed. I’ve heard the audio and i admit it’s definitely not great 😬 but I also didn’t think Katie Lowes had a particularly good voice either but I really enjoyed her Dawn. I also think that, like many here have said, people are just predetermined to hate on her whatever. I do think its a shame that the Ashley casting has caused ill feeling within the community. I know it wasn’t handled badly but it would suck if it affected the show’s chances when it comes to awards noms etc, when I think everything has been blown out of proportion. I mean, Laura is only gone 8 weeks! And that’s on the producers, whereas everything you hear from the cast and crew both in London and Broadway is what a wonderful show it is to work on with no egos, and just a bunch of people who enjoy working with each other.

Welcome to the board ahaz . I’m coming from this at a slightly different angle. I avoid stunt casted shows for this reason. I do not suggest that these performers have NO talent. My issue is, have they got MORE talent than the people being replaced or denied their chance to shine? It is slightly different I know with this one as Ashley is clearly replacing a more talented performer so the question is irrelevant however a prime example of the worst kind of stunt casting is Amber Davis. Ok, she went to Urdang from the age of 15-18. She had absolutely no prior experience in a show. Look at her bio in 9-5 programme. Her only claim to fame was her appearance in TV reality Love Island. From that appearance, in her own words on TV, She was given the role in 9-5 with only an hours workshop!!! I have been watching talented ensembles for over 35 years and despise it when they are overlooked for a TV personality. I don’t include Blake or Lucie in this post as they both have very good credentials.

They literally just got extended by two months. That means nothing. Shows announce booking extensions all the time to try and give the impression they are doing well. And then close 2 weeks later. But even on a quiet Monday night it’s playing to 80% capacity. So I’m not sure where the doom and gloom is coming from - it’s had a period of having to close the upper circle and survived it and has now got another huge promotional push with Ashley. The Weisslers aren’t stupid - they have a reputation of saving money and saving face. If it was flopping as bad as you have made out repeatedly, they’d be calling it a limited run and not extending. Interestingly, in the USA, you can see the box scores for the entire three year run and it averages around 60% yet shows no signs of closing, despite gloommongers there too.

80% capacity is great, but it is dependent on how much those people have paid for their tickets. And not everyone is.paying full price for this, so it might not be as good as you think, and this goes for any show, not just Waitress.

If the show was doing badly, surely it would just close. Why bother extending the booking period?
Interestingly this is the only thread that I’ve seen it suggested that a booking extension is meaningless- it’s almost as if people will raise any unsubstantiated criticism for the sake of it. I was going to do a timeline of the absurd things that have been written in this thread but I’d rather not spend the negative energy on it.

It has been an incredible thread to follow in terms of generating jaw-dropping speculation, widely diverse and often very entrenched attitudes and sheer craziness....and that’s why I lurve this thread.

Whilst I agree with most of this anthem, numerous shows in the last couple of years have announced a booking extension as a last gasp attempt at getting some advance booking cash into the coffers. Waitress will be just fine. It isn’t big & flashy, doesn’t have a huge cast or band and doesn’t look like it costs a huge amount to run. It’s in a perfect sized theatre for an unknown quantity and is slowly building a following. It’ll be fine.

It's been said in many threads over time including wicked amongst others. Those comments have been based on experience by people who have seen many a show close weeks after extending booking periods. It's not some weird stick being used just to beat Waitress. Extensions are a tool sometimes used as a last ditch bid to push interest. I'm not saying that is happening here but it's not unheard of

What’s weird to me is that the booking extension is only until Dec 7th .... aren’t the weeks leading up to Xmas some of the busiest times for theatre ticket sales, so why cut them off then?! I don’t know the ins and outs and the economics of all of this. People were saying the show wouldn’t last through May and yet here we are, and the last few weeks the show has sold really well, especially last week, with Sat’s show a sellout. I know people will have been wanting to catch Kat and the OG cast while they could but still .... But then just looking at dates in the upcoming months the advance sales aren’t great, and they’ve already closed off the upper circle for sales for next Monday’s and Tuesday’s shows which isn’t particularly encouraging 😬
But as others have said, Waitress on Broadway has continued despite all the naysayers and recent poor ticket sales so I’m not gonna write the show off until it’s officially closed 😆😭

I would never write any show off. I think the reality is somewhere between the naysayers and the fans. Whether that is enough is down to the public
