Starting Sept 3, new weekly musical theatre cabaret night every Monday (!) from 10pm until 1am. Venue is Studio 88 which is near Leicester Square Launch night goes on until 3am with Sam Attwater, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, Rob Houchen, Adrian Bevan, Jessica Brady, Lauren Drew, Oliver Savile and Danielle Steers. Free, with donations to TheatreMad. studio88.bar/the-show-goes-on/News story here: www.thestage.co.uk/news/2018/new-late-night-musical-theatre-cabaret-show-comes-west-end/I wish it well but wonder if there's much of an audience for this in London, where compared to NY everyone seems much keener to head home after a show. And on a Monday too... One interesting note in the venue's FAQs which I hope will not apply to Monday nights and which puts me off the whole venue a bit:

Hosting a musical theatre night and not allowing groups of men in seems a little flawed...

Doing this sort of thing on a Monday night is just stupid - quite a lot of people will have to work the next day! This would potentially interest me if it was a Friday or Saturday night, but during the week I need to sleep.

I've written to MADtrust to ask if they're comfortable supporting a venue with such a discriminatory door policy, even if they don't apply it on Monday nights.

What a nasty place. Raising money to support people with HIV and Aids with that attitude.
I wonder if Biggins and the other performers know what they've agreed to?

Not that there can be a legitimate reason but do we know the reason for the door policy?

Alot of straight venues have that policy. All male groups get too rowdy and can be a hassle.

Whereas, as has oft been reported in the Bad Behaviour thread, all-female groups are always completely quiet and demure.

But male singles? And I know many holiday camps (or whatever they call themselves these days) have "no single gender / extended parties without permission) but again, that's taking each case on its merits, not a problem and sensible. I had no idea some holiday venues didn't allow single gender groups. I mostly go on holiday with my mother & aunt & we've never been forbidden to stay anywhere because we're all three female.
As for this venue, I suppose I can see why nightclubs may be afraid that large groups of men could get drunk & violent but to deny entry to single men seems absolutely bizarre. What do they think they're going to do? Each have a fight with themselves? (Okay, don't mention The Comedy About A Bank Robbery!)
Oh and I agree with @posterj that 10pm-1am on a Monday night is ridiculous. I'm tired enough the next day when I go to Showstoppers' monthly Mondays at the Lyric & they finish about 9.30pm.

No single males is because they assume that single lads are just out to leer at women and make a nuisance of themselves.
It's all discriminatory in a way, but I understand why they do it.

I understand that if this was a club known to attract a crowd of straight men and women, where the number of men would be disproportionately larger than women. But it's a musical theatre cabaret night. Are they serious? Talk about not knowing your audience.

I’ve had a response from MADtrust saying they weren’t aware of this policy and are following up with the venue and the promoter.

This is my response from the venue:
I can confirm that the policy has now been removed from their website. Their company motto, in pretty rainbow colours, is "In our House we are All Equal".

I can understand their policy to be honest. Those single male musical theatre fans can be an absolute nightmare. Picking fights with anyone who says anything bad about Patti!

Did anyone go to this btw? I went with a few theatre blogger friends and had a great time. The performers were fabulous and the vibe was so casual and fun that we ended up sticking around until the end (an ungodly 3pm!). Won't be going every week, obvs, but I'll definitely be back soon!

We didn't have any trouble bc we came in drips and drabs, so I'm not sure really. Tbh I'd not read this thread before we went so I didn't know anything about the door policy at the time.

As an aside, I wonder if there's a world record for Highest Percentage of Daniels in an On-Line Community.

I only respond to Dan, unless it’s my Mum or the Mrs when I quite often get a brisk ‘Daniel!’
