Next year's booklet must be about to go to the printers. Anyone heard what might be on, or which actors may be persuaded to go to Stratford? The complete works project is entering the final phase and fingers crossed we get some neglected plays in the Swan.

It’s a bit optimistic to say the complete works project is in the final phase, I can think of about a dozen plays that haven’t appeared yet, looks like it will limp on for another three years at least.

A few thoughts about the RSC - we've only been going to Stratford since the start of the current Complete Works - what is likely to happen when it concludes?
I assume there will still be regular productions of Shakespeare, but fewer than currently? I'm not sure what has happened in the past - but will other plays start appearing in the main house? Apart from the Christmas shows, the only non-Shakespeare I can recall in recent years is Death of a Salesman. And I wonder when the next Complete Works project is likely to start

Oh, they'll just keep churning out Shakespeare after Shakespeare after Shakespeare, it's what they do. While they're actively working through a Complete Works cycle, you're unlikely to see repetition, because they can't afford to waste time on yet another Midsummer Night's Dream when they still haven't done Pericles, King John, or Henry VIII, but when they're not constrained by the project of Doing Every Single One (which might not include Pericles actually), then you'll have to wait less time between the more popular plays. I wouldn't expect there to be any less Shakespeare than there currently is, it'll just get a little harder to predict what's coming next because they won't be working off a checklist anymore.

Yes, indeed i count that as final phase! I reckon we are looking at 2021 to finish.

Let’s hope they replace him with someone younger and less conservative at the end of this cycle.

Now that they dont transfer to a London base for a season, non Shakespeares are the exception. Its not like the North American theatres who feel they have to programme musicals, more modern revivals plus Christmas Carol every year.

The problem is finding an AD who is prepared to relegate their other work and focus on Shakespeare, you won’t get many of the best directors because of that. Simon Godwin maybe?

Doran was prepared to do that but turned out to be unsuitable for running a company. Maybe if they appointed co-directors.

Mine
Robert Lepage. Transfer Coriolanus from other Stratford Ivo van Hove
Imagine a Lepage Pericles and V H Measure For Measure
Robert Icke
Sally Cookson. Yes....devises a lot but exciting prospect
Michael ?Boyd. But he won't
Katie Mitchell. She won't
Elizabeth Freestone
All be interesting to see at RSC but they won't and RSC will not deviate from usual roster ..........
Future AD. Don't think it's an attractive post anymore.....Goold would have been wonderful but alas too late.
It is Shakespeare's house so someone with a passion but also a dynamic approach that is not simply using contemporary music etc....rather a director who can illuminate through understanding and also attract good actors on board.Talent this season not great at all.

I know you dont rate him but its hardly been an unsuccessful tenure so far. WE transfers, 2016 anniversary. They tried Nunn and Hands as co-directors, didnt seem to work.

Of the 20 or so Shakespeares in the cycle so far how many have been outstanding productions? None ? How many have been appallingly bad ? Well, three of the Romans for a start. Nunn and Hands worked fine, why do you say it didn’t ?

Doran has been pedestrian and nepotistic. His tenure has been lacking in ambition.
The sooner he makes way, the better.

Nah. I mean, some of us were toddlers 30 years ago so definitely didn't have an opportunity to see it, but Dr Brock saw it so clearly that's ALL that matters and literally no one should ever think about producing it ever again.
