so......a Warwickshire theatre has changed character names in Aladdin to avoid racist accusations.
I really think I've had it.

Why have you had it? Is laughing at silly pretend Chinese names something that's a big part of your life? 'Cos it's definitely been a big part of Chinese people's lives, only it's not just harmless fun for them, it is ... well, racist behaviour. Sorry if you can't deal with the fact that people aren't just rolling over and letting other people be awful to them for no decent reason anymore.

Is that Nanky Poo they would be changing? I suspect some of the names in Aladdin were made up by people trying to be funny in the 'olden days' so maybe they should be changed now.

A lot of them would have been contemporary references that have lost all meaning now - and are no longer funny even if not racially insensitive. Changing ‘em to something modern audiences will laugh at like the original ones did is totally within the panto tradition.

Seems pretty uncontroversial to me. It's not like they're traditional names going back to the days of Dan Leno. Why would anyone care if they were changed? |
