Good luck everyone. We'll get through this! Don't really have a choice, haha. And we'd better start getting used to it, because we've got more of the same (and worse) in the future. I wouldn't get much respite even back home in Inverness where today it'll hit 29C. Luckily by the time I'm back at the weekend it'll be down to low 20s. I must check what Edinburgh will be like for my Fringe trip next week.

How's aircon in the Lyttleton? Seeing Rutherford tomorrow, 38C day Effective. It's under the seats, so don't put huge bags there to block the air flow. Yeah I tend to use the cloakroom and anyway I don't think they permit large bags.

They've always been very upfront that the reason they don't want large bags under seats in the Lyttelton is because of the ventilation system, and back when they were less strict and occasionally wavering on whether I should be forced to use the cloakroom or not, I could generally convince them to let me keep my bag by promising to keep it on my lap for the duration of the show. Now that they are more strict, it is useful to remember that "under the seat" isn't intended to be a handy storage space even for a little bag or light jacket.

How's aircon in the Lyttleton? Seeing Rutherford tomorrow, 38C day. The nice thing about Rutherford is they have a rain curtain before the play starts, so I expect temperatures will be lovely in the Lyttelton with that going on. I and other front rowers might not be able to resist sticking our faces under it. But hey, good news. The Met Office forecast is for a London high of 37C but it will feel like 36. Yay! What a relief.

Trains are an absolute nightmare...
Speed restrictions of what feel like 5mph put on trains, so if you’re going for next Wednesday’s matinee, I suggest leaving now.

Oooh, clammy, slippery lego pieces! Enjoy. No, fortunately it was in the part of the building where the aircon is working. During a break I was the only person in the room so turned the temperature down a degree - I don't think anyone noticed! Now holed up in another room with aircon. It's so nice I'm planning to work late to stay cool for longer. Frankly I'd sleep here if only I was allowed to!

I think we should spare a thought for the cast, and audience, of Season's Greetings, which begins previews tonight at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. Imagine having to pretend it's an English Christmas on the hottest day ever!

We're going to see The Deep Blue Sea at the Minerva in Chichester tomorrow afternoon. Just had an email saying their air conditioning has a technical fault and is out of order. Oh joy... Yeap the air conditioning I saw still indisposed at Chichester for the Deep Blue Sea. You would’ve thought that the engineers would’ve figured to stick 50p in the meter. Just got a follow-up email - they’ve found where to stick 50p and the air con is working again! Hooray!

To satisfy my curiosity I put a thermometer in my loft.
42.5°C
Nope.

I'd like to reassure those people saying that trains don't stop due to the heat in other countries that yes, they do. Admittedly our tracks are set to withstand higher temperatures in general, but on days when it gets into the 40s trains are quite often slowed in case of warping rails.

I just walked 5 mins from my workplace to the nearest tube and am now sat in a train that feels like it actually has specially heated seats. I'm drenched in sweat. Still, as someone who once stood in a materials test chamber at 60C, this is nothing!
That said, from memory, the current conditions don't feel especially different from that. I suppose above 40ish it stops feeling hotter.

Advice from someone in her 8th NYC summer: Carry baby wipes with you wherever you go. It'll be worth it.

Pleased to report Toast did not toast the audience. Pleasantly cool, walnut whips holding their shape. (really, as you'll know if you've been!)

Pretty horrendous in East London. Train cancelled coming home so 30 minute wait in the heat for next one. Then no buses so a walk home. Put washing out and it dried in 10 mins. Then just as I picked it in massive clap of thunder and the heavens opened. Only lasted a few minutes but hasn't made the air any cooler. Looking forward to another lovely night trying to sleep. The temperatures of the last few day reminded me of when I worked in Greece but I was a lot younger, thinner and by the sea so didn't feel as bad.

About 30 seconds of big rain plops. Two claps of thunder.

Same here. At around 03:00 on Wednesday morning there was a wonderful storm where I am. This afternoon it was a few seconds of rain on the windows and then "Ha! No cooling rain for you!"

Sitting down was your mistake - I actually got some (admittedly quite warm) air standing up on the Tube that made it almost bearable. I think it's rather pleasant outside now, though I did spend the worst part of the day in my air conditioned office!

I just love the cretinous advice from the train companies not to travel! The vast majority of train travel is work related. Are we all just supposed to ring in sick? Supposed to be the 21st century ffs.

Indoor temperature topped out at 28 degrees here, outside was 33 so not as bad as it could have been. Be nice to go outside again in the cooler weather tomorrow with some nice rain.
