Anyone else seen this?
I caught it at the last minute a few days ago and really enjoyed it. It's certainly on a par with the Park Theatre's production over Christmas, possibly even surpassing it.
The Guildford School of Acting are staging the production at the Charing Cross Theatre with their first cohort of graduating actor-musicians.
The musical element is fairly minimal and is used to underscore parts of the dialogue in the main. If anything I think there could have been much more made of this as the actor-musicianship is fairly superfluous to proceedings at times, save for the hockey match where violin bows double as hockey sticks and the whole concept really comes together quite brilliantly.
The lead performances are all strong, with great characterisation from Katy Ellis as Trixie, Persia Babayan-Taylor as Sybil, and Lara Lewis as Clare Beaumont. Marina Papadpoulos fills Daisy with warmth in a likeable portrayal, while Gemma Evans treats the audience to some hilarious (intentionally) bad singing as Monica.
All tickets are under £20 so it's well worth catching if you have chance in the coming week before it closes on 30th June.
Ripping, jubilating fun.
Four stars.
