At what point does it begin to alter the integrity of the show’s music as it was written though if any show transposes the key for any performer. I mean this generally. Not picking on trans performers. I really think it depends on the show. The keys of Gypsy were lowered for Angela Lansbury for example, whereas I can't imagine anyone ever lowering the key of Defying Gravity to suit a performer who couldn't sing it as written. I suppose it comes down to which is more important, the character or the vocals. If people expect a song to be sung a certain way, I expect producers will want to keep it as written. If the songs are less well-known and people are there for the character or actor, they can be more flexible. Yes. As someone said further up I guess the bigger the name the more ‘flexible’ the production as far as the music matching the singing. Angela Lansbury, legend though she undoubtedly is, is an acquired taste and falls into the Rex Harrison category for me - a fab character but a lot of speak/singing (spinging?) going on 😉

The person has to fit in the scope and requirements of the role as well. A trans actor as Jean Valjean clearly wouldn’t work, but if a trans actor auditioned and was the best to audition for the role of Edna Turnblad, then why not? Actually this is where I’ll start to disagree with you POL. If a trans actor auditions for the role of JVJ and can sing it and perform it authenticity then why shouldn’t they be cast? But then equally I say the same with a cis actor who can sing and perform as Bernadette.

But then equally I say the same with a cis actor who can sing and perform as Bernadette. The key there is 'if...they can sing it' That means the whole role. Which requires a high rock tenor sound combined with good falsetto and a rich baritonal quality for a good chunk of the score. There are few non trans performers who can pull off the role successfully. The likelihood of a trans man having that sort of voice is very slim indeed. If a trans performer can meet the vocal demands of the part of Valjean then they should be considered. But I struggle to see that happened at least in the medium term.

Didn’t think about the vocal requirement.
A trans person does not fit in with the profile of the JVJ, it wouldn’t work. People have to believe in the character and if the audience doesn’t, you won’t sell tickets, it would be a laughing stock. Everyone Talking About Jamie it would be perfect.

...and this is an example of why this board is becoming increasingly toxic. For everyone making an ill considered remark/completely innocent mistake/unintentional micro-aggression there are a dozen waiting to pounce with accusations of god knows what. Surely a quick DM would be more appropriate way of dealing with it than trying to ‘cancel’ someone publicly? What happened to the supposed kindness we were meant to be bathing in? Lots of us know very few people on the board and could be making massive assumptions about who they are?

I was saying that this illustrates the misunderstanding that it currently in society and does nothing to improve it. It doesn’t take much for one to educate themselves on why micro aggressions are harmful, nor does it take much to recognise what those micro aggressions are. You can continue making ill informed posts to your hearts’ content from now on without being challenged, all whilst individuals who may be struggling with their own gender identity or transition read every word.

I stand by my point. Whilst it isn’t in any way your responsibility to try and educate others, you could give them a gentle nudge in a more private fashion than calling them out so publicly. ‘Don’t come at me’? Like you went at POL? Balance in all things please. Attempting to be virtuous and inclusive extends in all directions, not just the one you want it to. Seek first to understand.

By running into the shadows and messaging behind the scenes to bring up my feelings on the comment, it does nothing to show those who may have been upset by it that they aren’t alone, and that the discussion has two sides. When you already feel lonely in the world just seeing that one person shares your views can make all the difference. I appreciate that you stand by your point, as do I. Trans people are people, who feel pain, humiliation and shame just like anyone. It’s hard enough to exist in a world where they have been made the butt of the joke in nearly every example of representation in the media. The laughing stock analogy further perpetuates this. Also, by implying that Jamie is a better fit than Les Mis insinuates that queer people only belong in queer stories or places. Correct.

To be honest, I think Jean Valjean is a very bad example to pick of a male role to be taken by a trans man.
All the trans men I know are small and slight (and in their twenties). I can picture them in roles like Rolfe in The Sound of Music, Evan Hansen, Mr Mistoffelees, potentially Fiyero or one of the men in Legally Blonde. But as a man who can lift a cart with his bare hands and wade through sewers for miles carrying a younger man when well into his sixties? I'm really struggling to picture it. Maybe if I knew an older trans man build like the proverbial brick building I'd feel differently, but the fact that trans men will follow the average height/build curve for females does make them playing a physically imposing role against cis men much harder. I wouldn't choose cast a 5'4" narrow-across-the-shoulders cis man as Valjean either, although you might get away with it in a concert setting.
I also think trans men would have major problems with vocal changes (not many men can play Valjean, let alone if you've been a soprano until your mid-twenties and have to re-train your voice completely to a new range), and if they're binding then singing and dancing will be much harder.

Unbelievable.

There’s a time limit on editing posts to stop people going “back in time” and changing things they said. However doesn’t work on the mobile version of the site. Blame Proboards for that, not the moderators.

Is that why I could delete a post once and have never been able to again? Mystery solved if so!
(I wasn't wanting to delete for nefarious reasons, I'd mucked up quoting and couldn't work out how to solve it on the mobile site because you don't get the code version in the same way as you can on the desktop site.)

Has anyone seen or planning to see the latest tour? Quite keen to hear about it as it seems to have been given the Hairspray tour treatment and stripped right down to its bare bones.
The website seems to be a bit of a mess as well, no proper cast list and quite a lot of dates and venues missing from the booking page. The website is only selling tickets for English and one Welsh date. No Irish or Scottish dates seem to be available despite it being billed as a UK Tour.

I'll be volunteering for it at the Derngate in Northampton at the beginning of August so can report back then unless anyone else is going sooner.
Normally it's such a fantastic show but I am worried if it's been cheapened this time and lost its sparkle.
