It was probably the Wicked shirt to be honest... This made me laugh out loud. God, I love this thread!

I'll try to stop him when I next go because Im trying to fill my programme but it was just a bit odd. There's rushing off cause you're missing your train and then there's the way he looked at us which wasn't pleasant. I’d leave it, I reckon.

So you didn't ask him to stop. He didn't stop. You are complaining about it. I really have heard it all now! No wonder my visits to stage door are few and far between these days. Between those fans who want endless chats, the twelfth selfie of the week and (a current trend) those who think the cast should counsel them on various aspects of their life it's a miracle the performers manage to get home and have any kind of break before the performance begins the next day! When I stage doored last week at Wicked, I asked “would you mind signing this please?” to Sophie and Alice and they actually seemed quite surprised. Do most other people just thrust programmes in their faces?

Yes!! They do and it really annoys me as the standard stage door encounter these days is hand programme to performer. Performer feels they have to ask "did you enjoy the show" or else there would be no conversation at all. Half hearted "yes" and thrusting phone in face for a selfie in return.
This really annoys me about modern theatre.
I seem in the minority these days who go to the stage door to congratulate the performers. It's a new sad state of affairs and goes hand in hand with the sense of entitlement people think they have from those on stage.
I went to the first concert of the Sheridan Smith tour on Tuesday. Loads there at stage door after, many of whom hadn't even seen the show (another gripe of mine), all wanting autographs and selfies but actual comments about the show few and far between. I was one of the few saying how I had really enjoyed it and how great she was, comments which seemed to be really appreciated.

Hamilton and Dear EH on Broadway are pretty bad when it comes to people stage dooring when they haven’t seen the show, but I think Hamilton was worse when Lin was in it.

I go to stage doors if I want to speak to performers, in order to thank/congratulate them & maybe, if they have time, ask questions I have thought of during the show. It's rare that I ask for autographs & even rarer I ask for a photo. For the latter often I seem to be in a minority of one, with everyone other than me asking for selfies. I'd rather have the memory of a conversation.

How has Sophie managed to get two weeks straight off? I thought they were allowed a max of 10 days.

They were both lovely girls who seemed happy to sign, take pics and even just chat to people who were waiting. I wouldn’t want to be that person that just says their entire life story to the performer though, because chances are they really don’t care and it’s even more likely they need to rush for the tube or a bus home.

Benjamin Yates on his Fiyero debut. I LOVE it! Better than Aaron Sidwell according to my friend who has seen the tour cast. Apparently Aaron is quite rude/standoffish at stage door too. He was lovely when I met him in Bristol. I told him he was the funniest Fiyero I've seen and that I loved his deadpan comedy, then panicked that I was suggesting his performance was one-note so backtracked and he laughed and said deadpan was what he was going for so he was glad he was pulling it off. Everyone has rough days and pulls unintentional facial expressions from time to time so it's not fair to judge him for a one off interaction or lack thereof. That being said, some of the responses to sophizoey have been unnecessarily snarky and smug, and that's pretty sh*tty too. If Ria Jones can turn up night after night for 'Sunset Boulevard' there's no reason why an Elphaba can't do the same for 'Wicked'. It's not that tough a sing, all they've got to do is waft a broomstick about for the most part, they're just lazy. They've also got to manage not to drop the broomstick, remember I'm pretty sure Stephanie J. Block once hit an ensemble member in the face with one during Defying Gravity when she gestured too enthusiastically and it jumped out of her hands (not a joke, that actually happened). I honestly don’t get the fascination with “new” Elphaba’s! We have 8 ladies currently green, 7 of who are new in the last 12 months (including Alexandra Grierson who still hasn’t been on). And the 8th was Alice promoted from Standby who did a handful of shows because Rachel was a machine and very rarely off in the last run. How can that be recycling?! I love you @welsh_tenor Amen to this! Excluding a much deserved promotion (IMO) for Alice, we've had nothing but new Elphabas in the last year. Not so keen (personally) on Laura but Amy x2, Nikki and Aimee are all great, fresh, innovative new additions and I can't wait for other Amy and Alexandra to make their debut. How has Sophie managed to get two weeks straight off? I thought they were allowed a max of 10 days. I'm surprised by this, as Natalie McQueen used to have to schedule her holiday really creatively to be able to get close to 2 weeks off at once. She'd take a week off, come back for 3 days, then have another week, so I'm guessing Sophie must have only been given 2 weeks off as she's a lead. Actually having said that, I think Savannah had 2 weeks off scheduled at one point too, but she changed it at short notice so she only ended up having 10 days.

After Kerry was allowed her do a few Wicked shows, have a few days off to do solo shows at the other end of the country and then repeat, I guess anything goes.

I agree, and if the toughest part of the show is Defying Gravity, they get half an hour to pull themselves together before they are back onstage again anyway 😂😂 Indeed. In fact, I'd say the hardest job on 'Wicked' is whoever has to shoehorn Fiyero into those jodhpurs. A job I'm more than happy to volunteer for if they're short staffed by the way. I’ll be shoe horn standby. This is a role that definitely needs cover.

I'd say Elphaba is a pretty tough role, it's not the biggest sing out there but she is on stage nearly the entire show and she doesn't really have a moment to relax, she's always in some kind of fight. As an actor that takes a lot of energy, you'd definitely feel pretty knackered by the end of the week! That's not to say someone new to the role couldn't do it though if they were prepared to take that on. It helps for someone like Laura to be standby first though I'd say, as she doesn't have a lot of theatre work behind her yet.

Surely at some point there has to be someone new to the role? Even with producers wanting recycled people there will be a time when there isn't anyone recycled to come back?
If Laura doesn't get promoted after Alice, it would increase the chances of someone new joining the show, would it not?
The likes of Kerry, Rachel, Willemijn, Louise and Alexia won't return again by the looks of it (I know you can never say never for them or anyone who's been in Wicked before) but it's doubtful a previous West End lead would come back after Alice leaves and if Laura doesn't get promoted.
This increases the chance of someone new joining or someone joining who has never been in the West End cast before! 🤔

I honestly don’t get the argument being made...

This argument makes little sense with our current casts. Even if you were sick of seeing Alice you could see see new standby Laura. You could also see Amy on tour. New. Nikki on tour. New. Never mind any of the (new) understudies...
As far as green girls go, that's a whole lot of new!

Completely agree with welsh_tenor, I don't understand the recycling arguments when 7 out of 8 Elphabas are new since last July, and the eighth only did a year as standby before taking over. Elphaba may not be an Effie White level sing but it's one of few roles that requires you to belt an F5 8 times a week. If you look at the previous three tour Elphabas, Nikki and Jackie didn't even make it to the end of their contract and Ashleigh limped through to the end but could easily have gone the same way. It does affect performers and if I were the producers I'd be hesitant about casting anyone who wasn't tried and tested. If you feel that an Elphaba is tainted if they perform a show before becoming lead, go and see Amy Ross instead, it's not Alice's fault she didn't get lead right away.

Anyway, when is cast change ? I've lost touch with Wicked, can't remember when I last went Supposedly July. From what I've heard, it's hardly a cast change this year. I think Sophie, Alice, Jack, Melanie and Andy will stay but Sarah and Martin will probably leave and I'm not too sure about Bradley. I think Rosa will likely become Nessa full time (well technically she is but she isn't allowed to say she is) and maybe Russell Walker as Doctor Dillamond? I'd like to see a brand new Fiyero.

I know exactly who I want to see as Fiyero, but he's unavailable for it this year unless he leaves the tour he's in extremely soon even though it's just started. (It's Michael Colbourne, currently Jimmy in the Thoroughly Modern Millie tour) Maybe another year 🙃
Sophie and Alice have pretty much told me or friends of mine they're staying. I'd be pretty upset if Melanie leaves and with the exception of Fiyero - I'm really impartial to the other characters.

OK then, I'll put my annual Fiyero vote in for Andy Coxon or, after 42nd Street finishes, Philip Bertioli.

I honestly don’t get the argument being made... Sorry for any confusion, I wasn't trying to argue against the facts you said, just pointing out for those who are wanting someone 'brand new' and saying they don't think it will ever happen again that it might one day with the evidence I presented! 👌🏼

I never saw him in Les Mis but his voice is anything but quaky, stronger belt than Bradley and after him we need another Fiyero who can really sing.
