"Inspired by the Windrush generation and set in the writer’s hometown of Nottingham, Shebeen shines a light on a community under siege.
Theatre Royal Stratford East alumnus Matthew Xia returns to direct Mufaro Makubika’s new play, winner of Alfred Fagon Award."
I was surprised not to find a thread for this, which was well-reviewed when it opened at Nottingham Playhouse and is now playing at Stratford East. Either it's very booked up (both topical and likely appeal to the local audience) or the circle has been held off-sale as I found ticket availability very limited. Not often I want to trek to and from Stratford East as the time it takes limits my options for the rest of the day, but on the strength of the reviews and as I like new writing, I wanted to see this.

Just to add that though this is flawed, it's well worth seeing, both for itself and for those wanting to see the work of a new writer with a promising future. Also great to see the audience enjoying this so much and reacting and responding. The characterisation and acting are great; it's the structure which needs some work but it's still a good experience. Running time is just over 2 hours incl interval.

I got an email this morning from TRSE to "Beg, steal or borrow to get a ticket to Shebeen". I'm not sure about being encouraged to take up a life of crime. But, what the hell. I might give it a go.
