When in the past I’ve seen 'stars' act on stage I’ve always been very happily surprised and I remember that usually they have grafted hard to get to the top. I saw Gwyneth P and Jude Law and Daniel 'Harry Potter' all really good stage actors. So I’ve booked for Cate and am looking forward to this although as I have said it is based on an awful book which is practically unreadable and certainly disgusting to our modern ways of thinking

And it would appear in this case, having a membership ain’t gonna help you that much either!
It'll help a little IF you're successful in the ballot, in that having a membership then gets you a 48- or 24-hour head start over non-members when it comes to actually buying a ticket.
I'm interested enough that I entered the ballot, but not so invested in seeing in Blanchett or the play that I'd be terribly disappointed if I didn't win an opportunity to buy a ticket. And if I DID, there's a limit to how much I'm prepared to spend.

So at least the outlook for tickets to this show isn't as awful as the Hiddleston thing. I missed out on that, so I like to assume the Andrew Scott Hamlet was much better, to comfort myself. It was definitely artistically a much more interesting production, with a lot more depth. And I saw that as someone who wasn't entirely sold on it. Branagh's production was far more classically text-focused. Hiddleston speaks Shakespearean verse beautifully, is excellent at expressing pain and grief, and gives great fight scenes, but with only a 3-week run inevitably he didn't get as much beneath the surface of the part as Andrew Scott did. Hope that comforts! (Personally I did enjoy Hiddleston more - but then, I'm a fangirl, so of course I did!) Another Hiddleston fan has gone to great lengths to recreate the play - from memory!- almost scene-by-scene in Lego. She's done up to A5S1 so far: www.futurerulerofmidgard.com/legohamlet/lego-hamlet-act-1-scene-1/ I know it sounds insane (ok, it probably is insane) but it's a pretty good recreation of the staging, at least. And rather funny. Yes, that does comfort, Kathryn, thanks. I recall from Coriolanus and Othello that he is rather good doing pain and grief and fight scenes, and I've seen classical Branagh before, so I feel I can imagine it. I'll watch that animation too, just because I know it'll be funny!

I agree it's off-putting. Sounds like the sort of thing you'd see on an 80s LP along with a pic of David Sylvian staring at a wall. I'd meant to say I'd just seen this and found it very funny. At a stretch, it could also be a very stark piano & vocal piece by Peter Hammill.

Gone to Earth has to be one of my favourite albums ever. Okay, his most recent work is basically rattling some tins in a creaky shed but it's still David Sylvian, so that's fine by me!

I'm sure this will sell on the strength of Blanchett's name, but I wonder if it will be quite the frenzied scrum that the NT seems to be expecting. The description of the play makes it sound a thoroughly grim prospect: that may turn out to be untrue, but it's surely only going to sell in advance to those who just have to see Cate in ANYTHING (perhaps even if she took over the lead in 'I'm Not Running').

You are probably right. This will sell out because is a tiny theatre and will of course attract her fans. However when Blanchett did Plenty in the West End it was busy but not sold out. I wonder if that's the reason why this is not going to the Lyttelton

why this is not going to the Lyttelton I think she (or someone involved) said it was because they wanted an intimate space.

That part of E Sussex isn't that near London! And Ms B probably needs a car to reach the nearest station.

I asked the NT to clarify this, but no response. It implies there are multiple ballots, but how do you know which one you’re entered into?
PLEASE NOTE: If you are a member and are successful in a ballot, your booking period will depend on which ballot you have succeeded in not your membership level. For example, if you are a Supporting Cast member but you have succeeded in the Public ballot, you will book during the Public ballot booking period.

For example, if you are a Supporting Cast member but you have succeeded in the Public ballot, you will book during the Public ballot booking period. Ballot 1: Supporting Cast and Young Patron Premium Booking noon 3 Dec to noon 4 Dec Ballot 2: Priority and Priority Plus members, Young Patron Member and Young Patron Associate, Advance Member Booking noon 5 Dec - noon 6 Dec Ballot 3: Public Booking noon 7 Dec - noon 8 Dec You’re entered into “your” ballot plus, if you’re unsuccessful, all subsequent ones. So, if you’re a Priority Member, you get two goes, in ballots 2 and 3, but if you miss out in ballot 2 and win in ballot 3, you’ll book in the ballot 3 booking period, not the Priority Member one. Explained here

Thanks @n1david for the clarification.
When I first read this it made absolutely no sense, now as a member if unlucky in the members ballot will have the back up of being entered into the public ballot.
At least there some weighting for members which was not clear initially.

Ridiculous system of booking. No doubt they will be selling lots of seats on the day.
