As i always wanted to have a british afternoon tea with scones and all, but i always are traveling alone i was wondering is it
possible/strange , proper etc to have afternoon tea alone? What do you guys think? Would i get weird looks?

I feel like it’s always portioned per person so you would be fine.
Afternoon tea is one of my favourite treats. I hope you find somewhere suitably lovely. I am a big fan of Claridges.

I was in Canada. Banff. Annas wanted to go horse-riding, and did. I said, “If you go horse-riding, I’ll wait for you in the Fairmont Hotel, Banff Springs, and I’ll be having Afternoon Tea.” And I was. I’d booked, afternoon tea for one, dressed up, and sat in the most beautiful lounge with the hugest picture windows I’ve ever seen, looking over the mountains. And it was glorious! I hadn’t anticipated Annas wandering in to meet me, sweaty and muddy after his ride, and for a split second I was a little embarrassed. But then I thought, “Who cares?” Go! That's all very well, but are any of you old enough to remember the great treat that it was to enjoy afternoon tea served in one's seat in the stalls and dress circle at matinees in the West End theatres, especially those on Shaftesbury Avenue?
The teas were presented on wooden trays with a rather meagre assortment of cakes and biscuits but it was the pot of tea and jugs of milk and hot water that formed the basis of the serving. The tinkle of spoons in cups was the sound that filled the theatre during the interval and then the opening of the second act was generally spoiled by the noise of the attendants collecting the trays when the play began again.
That was the West End at its most genteel, especially if it was a comedy with Dame Edith Evans or Gladys Cooper or Sir John Gielgud on stage! Times have changed since then although we still have to put up with the glasses of beer or wine that people can't seem to do without at the theatre, and that is all the way through the entire show!

tony, I just knew that if anyone on here would be able to remember the rattle of china as tea trays were being prepared and cleared either side of a matinee interval it would be YOU!
I would love to place a matinee interval order for tea now if it were possible... It sounds heavenly! I’d even pay through the nose for it, as long as it were served with a couple of gaudy French Fancies.

Oh I love a nice afternoon tea. Have done afternoon tea dance at The Savoy, The Ritz, Fortnum and Mason which were all great.
Best value is Patisserie Valerie which charges £25 for two.
I hope this doesn't come over as pretentious but the best was when I was invited to the garden party at Buckingham Palace. It was very surreal and amazing experience. Tea and cakes were lovely and something I will never forget. Ended the day by going to see Liza at the RAH still dressed in my morning suit.

The best afternoon tea I ever had was at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai. My partner and I enjoyed it so much we went again the following day. Although I wasn’t alone I would have been fine by myself.

You should definitely go alone and enjoy yourself. Eat cake and people watch 😊 My favourite afternoon tea in London was the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed one at One Aldwych, well worth every penny. There’s also Dolly’s in Selfridges that do a nice and quite reasonably priced afternoon tea.

I've been single for longer than I care to remember so often end up doing things alone - I always think why should I miss out just because I can't find someone else to go with?
The Radisson Blu just off Oxford Street does a very good afternoon tea, and I love the themed one at the Berkeley as well. The one at the Wallace Collection is also good and in a really lovely atrium setting.
You can also get a very decent and very cheap afternoon tea at the Cafe in the Crypt at St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square - £9.50 I think for sandwiches, scones and a couple of cakes (plus the tea), and it's a rather unique setting where you won't feel at all conspicuous being alone. I expect many of the galleries and churches will be similar.

I think there are a few Meetup groups for Afternoon Tea if you want to have a look, I've done two as a "group" and loved the Marylebone Hotel afternoon tea so much I've gone back a few times with others (it's a little walk up from Debenhams Oxford Street and the ladies loo is lovely). The afternoon tea website link further up the thread is good source of information. Beware of Wowcher deals, I've had 2 very disappointing experiences.

Only time we've ever booked a 5* Hotel. this was a treat for the last 2 nights of our trip to India, accompanied by a 90 year old in a wheelchair. Everything about it was brilliant. The afternoon tea was unlimted - everything including Dim Sum, Indian Treats and the full Cucumber Sandwiches, Scones and cakes all with a view over the Gataeway of India and Elephant Island . Stunning. |

Ooh talking about unlimited afternoon teas, the High Tea at Raffles Hotel in Singapore is fantastic - the usual 3 tier stand then an unlimited hot and cold, sweet and savoury buffet with everything from spring rolls to bread and butter pudding - we took a box full back to our hotel!

Love afternoon tea in London and like others say the .co.uk is good for offers etc
One of my faves was haymarket hotel was well priced too
Been to F&M which is great but ££££ and unless they have changed it but used to charge for extra sandwiches which I felt was cheeky for the price you pay initially
One of the best was the Dorchester unlimited supplies fab service and surroundings felt like a real treat

i have no booked at Fortnum & Mason but i am not sure i made it right? is there the possibility of booking it wrong the confirmation says "Thank you for booking through AfternoonTea.co.uk at Fortnum & Mason - The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. We are pleased to confirm your a la carte Afternoon tea booking " - what does this a la carte mean? thought it is a special tray you get on the table? isn't a la carte when i choose it for myself? i didn't have to pay in advance, do i have to pay everything there then? sorry for the stupid questions  |

Having had a quick look I think it just means you choose when you get there your selection? I'm sure they would answer an email if you were worried! But yes, you make the reservation then pay on the day! Anyone else after a recommendation viserys and I had a lovely tea in the National Portrait Gallery rooftop restaurant. Some dude did interrupt an otherwise serene afternoon by proposing to his lady though. And they weren't even having cake. Ladies, don't marry a man unless he gets you cake. |

ah got another email, think its all alright so how does that work ? i got one of those tower trays and tea and the waiter brings more when asking? They keep feeding you and filling your tea pot until you can no longer walk. They then do a box of more food for you to take away and leave on the seat of someone who’s bad behaviour has annoyed you and is not looking where they sit down. |
