This was a top-notch and extremely enjoyable recital by two performers at the very top of their game. Didonato's recital was wide ranging including Haydn, Granados and Ravel; the later I particularly enjoyed because it was 'Sheherazade' - for this she gave a hypersensitive performance, completely matched by Pappano's fabulous tone colours on the piano. She ended her published programme with two rarities from The Great American Songbook - 'The Siren Song' and 'Go little boat' both were by Kern with words by Wodehouse. Then followed two undisputed masterpieces: Kern's 'All the things you are' and Rodgers and Hart's 'With a song in my Heart.' She did these with great aplomb, although I found her a bit more operatic in this area than I expected; she's not able to get the insouciance of a Dawn Upshaw in this repertoire. Her encores were Rossini's La Danza (Tarantella) which showed her unmatched coloratura style and Berlin's 'I love a Piano' - this was terrifically done with wonderful rapport between her and Pappano.

That sounds like a splendid concert and it's good to see 'serious' singers paying attention to the GAS songs of Gershwin, Kern, Rodgers, Berlin, etc. Speaking of the last, for me the definitive version of 'I Love a Piano' has to be Barbara Cook, with the wonderful Wally Harper on piano, which I heard at a live concert, but that's not to say anything against Judy Garland and others on YouTube, including the extraordinary version by Liza Minnelli which is unlike anything else I have ever heard – of anything by anybody!

There's a super version by Michael Feinstein on his 'Live at the Algonquin' CD (this has many of his best tracks and is much recommended.) He also performed it live in London at the end of his concert at the Palace Theatre - in fact it seems to be a favourite final encore item for a number of singers. Last night Pappano was a superb accompanist in this song - as he was in everything else for that matter.
