Went to the premiere of this at the BFI today (which was also screened to cinemas).
A good film, nicely summarising his career as an actor and activist. Loads of clips including some rare ones from early in his career - I agree with him that his early TV acting wasn’t up to much! Felt a bit like a premature obituary, supported by a rather odd Q&A hosted by Graham Norton (who was great) which had Sir Ian on stage with Derek Jacobi, Martin Freeman and Orlando Bloom. Derek Jacobi was quite fun given his long history with McKellen, but Freeman and Bloorm didn’t really have much to say beyond what a wonderful actor he is and what a nice guy he is.
Starry audience including Helen Mirren, Martin Sherman, Russell Tovey, Michael Cashman...
File under interesting but inessential.

I always remember Germaine Greer talking (to Jenny Eclair on LBC when she did that brilliant Saturday morning gossipy Arts show) about her dislike of Shakespeare being fuelled by Ian’s performances. Especially where he insisted on getting his cock out (her words, not mine). She found it bizarre that hoards of schoolchildren would be subjected to his “rubbery appendage”. Can’t remember which play it was.
Ive never seen him act live so I may be doing him an injustice but I just find him to be a complete cliche. He’s the Male Judi Dench. You can never forget who you’re watching.

You forgot to mention Lesley Joseph 😝 You know, I thought it might be her, but I was a bit far away to be certain, and when I considered that she’s such a homebody and never goes to celeb events, I thought it was probably not her.

I’ve seen him several times and never seen him get his cock out- maybe Germaine Greer has either been very ‘lucky’ with her choice of his shows, or she has been having some very odd flights of fiction. Having said that, I’m going to see his King Lear when it starts up this summer, and am hoping I don’t get bollock-bedazzled from my seat in the second row 😵

Unless things have changed since Chichester, no cocks in Lear (and I’ve never seen his, either)

I saw a broadcast this afternoon and enjoyed it a lot. Have only seen McKellen on stage once in No Mans land and will be seeing King Lear but find him a very interesting and inspiring man. Found the documentary interesting and moving in parts and was a nice look at his career and life. Lots of very interesting things and nice archive clip. Liked the Q and A after but am not the biggest fan of Martin Freeman or Orlando Bloom but liked Dereck Jacobi but it was nice to hear other people’s stories, if I’m honest I just want to be friends with Ian Mckellen.

Seen McKellen in lots and kinda see what you mean but isnt that what happens with v long careers?

It’s a good ten years back since I heard it. She was very disparaging. She was publicising her book about Ann Hathaway at the time which was panned by the critics if I recall correctly. And she hasn’t covered herself in glory since, of course.
