Mmm i'm sure its fun, but it not a show I'm exactly desperate to see. Plus, is Gloria Estefan really that big here in the UK? I only know a couple of her songs, but she hasn't had any hit albums or singles in years from my recollection?

I was gonna ask the same question danieljohnson14. Is she well-known there? She had a couple of hits back in the day here in Spain, where Latin music is a thing, but can't picture this show being popular in the UK. Of course I could be wrong. |

I’m not sure if this is all horribly ageist or if you really don’t appreciate the number of hits she had across the eighties? It has done well on Broadway and everybody loves a colourful party! 🎉

Was speaking to my grandad about this only last week- he said she was massive, so I definitely think it will be in for a decent run. I had visions of it going into the Phoenix but of course Chicago has trotted back along.
Feb 2019 is a long way ahead to be promoting anything- do you think she will be announcing a West End run starting sooner than we thought? Where do we think it'll go into?
I'm sure Baz will have the news on Thursday.

Glad to see this coming over here. Saw it in NY 2yrs ago and loved it.
It was actually really nice to watch this in the US as it gave me a chance to listen to the music WITHOUT all the stuff that you get with audiences at jukebox musicals in the uk. Though unlike shows like WWRY, Mamma Mia and MOWTOWN, the music really doesn’t lend itself to an audience sing along even with her more well known songs. It will be interesting to see how this goes with a UK audience.

I was a child of the 80s but am struggling to think of any of her songs (even after reading her Wikipedia page).
But I did discover that she has a net worth of $500 million, so she must have been big. She can also afford to keep the ticket prices reasonable.
I'm presuming (as daniel said earlier in the thread), it's a UK tour rather than a West End show, so could find an audience there.

I was thinking about this one over a day ago thinking why it hasn't come over here. great news if it's touring before going to the west end looks will defiantly be booking to see this one in Cardiff. And I always thought this would work better on tour rather than In the west end  . |

She was big here in the 80's and 90's - on the strength of her music alone (albums, singles and concert tickets sold extremely well) but she was never a celebrity as such, and not considered a cultural icon like she is in America.
I love her, but I suspect to most Brits she's been largely forgotten.

I genuinely did not know of her until this musical was announced to be happening on Broadway. Although I do know "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" but I didn't know who sang it. But in doing research, even now, I just assumed she was large in Latin America and that was it. Not ageist, not uneducated, just didn't have a clue who she was. |

Perhaps it’s a fact that Gloria is aware of too, hence her promoting the show well over a year before the tour begins. Maximise the sales with maximum exposure. I’ve been listening to the tracks from the OBCR to get a feel for the show, and I have to say, it is the shoddiest recording I’ve ever heard. It sounds like it was recorded with one microphone from an iPhone left at the front of the stage. Characters’ dialogue is either tinny or muffled depending on how close they are to said mic, and every echo is picked up. That said, I’m still looking forward to seeing this. It had a very respectable run on Broadway and I never thought we’d get the opportunity to see it over here. I would assume it will be the same production as the US tour will be due to wrap up around the time it comes here. |

I for one am excited about this - much more so than when Tina was announced. For people of a certain vintage (ahem) she was huge in the 80s and 90s. Check out Grammy-nominated "Reach" which was the theme song for the '96 Atlanta Olympics.
Throw in some Cuban beats, some genuinely lovely ballads and a comeback after a near fatal tour bus collision, I'm sure this will interest a pretty large demographic.

This hasn't done too badly in the Netherlands, where it's been playing in Utrecht since last October despite the very questionable casting of a blonde blue-eyed Dutch girl in a wig as Gloria Estefan. It'll close in August after a run of ten months. I figure if it can put Dutch bums on seats in one city for that long, a tour in the UK should be fine, perhaps even some months in the West End.

Unfortunately for me the mid 90s was largely when my appreciation for current popular music became prematurely stunted. But even so, wasn’t Dr. Beat at least sampled in a big hit single recently, or is that my mind playing tricks on me and it was also at least a decade ago? I swear to you all I’m not even 40 yet. |
