Well, if Petula was so bad, how come Cameron Mackintosh has had her back? I think he knows the business quite well don't you?

I know it's a difference of opinion as always, but I really don't know how anyone can have watched what I saw and said she was good. Those of us saying she's dreadful aren't saying it for the lols or to start argument - we are saying it because that's genuinely what we thought 🤷🏻♂️

If Petula wasn't playing the part as she was directed, she would be out.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion about a performance - and that will be based on many things including expectation, experience and personal connection. I personally found Petula Clark delightful. It's a cameo part and Clark seemed no better or worse in my recollection than people who had played the role in previous productions. However for me there was the additional frisson of seeing someone who had been a huge star during my childhood, and the lead in one of the first west end musicals I saw (Sound of Music) back on stage, albeit fleetingly. There's every chance that at 88 her performance varies from one day to the next (which isn't the sole domain of octagenrians) or simply that some people don't think that she was very good, or would have had more of a connection with a different performer.
However there is definitely a sense of absolutism creeping onto this board - opinion being presented as fact. This happens with both positive and negative comments, and we're probably all guilty of it to a greater or lesser extent, but it makes discussion quite difficult. It may be the curse of twitter whereby everything has to be posted whilst on the hoof, in short sound bites - but generally, this board is a better place when the thinking is more nuanced than "x is terrible" "no he/she isn't". Sorry if that makes me sound like an old fart - though maybe if the shoe fits........oh this isn't the Into The Woods thread!

Did the people who didn’t enjoy her see her at the start of the run I wonder? I saw the first night of her tour a few years ago and it wasn’t good. I actually left at the interval. But by the middle of the tour she was getting very positive reviews. At that sort of age it’s a big ask and would be understandable if she took a few weeks to settle in.

I saw her in the middle of the run and she was god-awful.

Without piling on, I found her performance in ‘Sunset’ excruciating to watch and listen to but kind of got what she was doing with it in terms of character.

Sure, and I should probably apologise if it came across that I was trying to say my opinion was the only one - genuinely not where I was going with it. Agree it's likely due to the sound bite way of social media, but nice that some people enjoy her !

As a Petula fan (did you guess?!!!) I also may have come across a bit strong. I was just defending her honour M Lord!! Everyone has the right to their opinion, I guess it's often the way we choose to put it across. On the few occasions I have met her Petula is very modest about her career , which some of you would appreciate!! Anyway I have said my bit and will always have a soft spot for her. Downtown is one of the classic songs after all!

She’s done well to make one song drag out her fame for so long. Bravo Petula!

I must admit being confused by her in MP. I get what they're trying to do, but it really could have been anyone up there, and the singing wasn't exactly great either. Without wanting to hijack... did any see or know anyone who saw the musical she wrote 'Someone Like You' It closed after 4 weeks in 1990. If anyone did, it will be hulmeman

Julia Sutton created the role of the Bird Woman in the original London production of MP in 2004. I saw her, and she was absolutely perfect. She was one of those workhorse West End actresses - a real stage vet - and had appeared in the original production of Oliver! as a replacement for Nancy I believe, also Half a Sixpence and many others (she also later appeared in La Cage and Sister Act in London)... it was lovely to see an actress with that history and experience play this small part without all the bells and whistles that surround Petula Clark given quasi-star billing and (checks notes) an Olivier Award nomination for her performance in this production for a show that never needed that type of press push to begin with - the people who are going to see Mary Poppins are going to see it anyway. The first production had no major stars, all theatre stalwarts so I don't understand the fuss around Clark in this version.

Yes it's fantastic.. let me at those cakes!! I've never been into Mary Poppins but I appreciate the 'knowing looks' at the camera and the little quirks. Very charming and fantastic videography.

I know Mary likes rum punch but the image of her with those bottles of spirits looks wrong to me. So too the idea that she goes into somewhere like the savoy and nick their platter of cakes

Amazingly Petula has actually gotten worse... Will post proper thoughts in the morning but, whilst I had a lovely time, something felt a little bit lacking for me with this tonight
