It is quite clunky though. Apparently there isn’t the room for a full flying crane, (nor will the floor support it) as utilised by David Copperfield to create a more realistic illusion for television. Shocking really with those prices. You’d have thought that they’d have invented silent jet packs by now really. This is Cameron Mackintosh ffs!!! Things have moved on since this was first staged. Aladdin is doing “invisible” wires for the carpet. I’m not suggesting that the same illusion could be used here but is it too much to ask that the final flight in MP might be reconsidered or *gasp* even improved? I’m sure it was earth shattering at the time but now? Not so much. |

Fair enough BB. I think a rigid structure like the carpet which is stage lit, is a lot easier to hide. Flying out into a dark auditorium with the light of the stage behind you is nigh on impossible to disguise whatever is propelling you. I just think that people are expecting a little bit too much out of it.

I do wonder why, in an environment of supposedly creative people, some are unable to suspend disbelief. The world that MP spends three hours creating more than supports the wonder of Mary’s flight at the end. If you don’t buy into the magic throughout it probably won’t, because *spoiler, people can’t actually fly. Nor do magic. Nor manipulate space and time via carpet bag. 🤷♂️ Actually the New York Times states in Ben Brantley review and that being very generous, he hated Mary Poppins. Much later on the Spiderman review, which he also hated, in doing so noted that the wires were very visible, in the flying, then went on to state there was better flying in Mary Poppins and the wires aren’t visible. so in the end faint praise for Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins has it and that is everything, it is sheer theatrical heaven, with breathtaking magic, flying and dancing upside down on the proscenium arch. No wonder why Cameroon Mackintosh didn’t want to relinquish the rights. The Mary Poppins story is a gift of a blank canvas, which the creatives have run with. |

The Witches of Eastwick had three people weaving in and out of each other over the audience. I still think you’re missing the point of Mary’s flight. If you need it to be more of an “effect” then I think you’ve already missed the magic in the story. |

Quite possibly. I have absolutely no emotional investment in the film or the show. I’ve seen the show when it toured and thought it was fabulous but not because of the magic or the flying which I thought were the most unsuccessful aspects of it.
I appreciate that other people ARE invested in it but its not above criticism is it?

I enjoyed this tonight. It's not my favourite show and i don't feel the need to see it again, but there's no denying its slick, its had some money spent on it and is obviously a big crowd pleaser.
I was in Stalls C31 and for £47.50, its an absolute bargain. Yes it's very close and you sometimes miss the overall 'big picture' of some scenes, but you really don't miss anything from the so called 'restricted view'
I did have some issues with the sound, but i don't know if that was because of my seat, or from the production itself. Zizi Strallen is a good Mary Poppins but she seems to lack a certain mischevious spark and Charlie Stemp is doing what Charlie Stemp has done in every show i've seen him in. I hope he gets cast as something other than a cheeky chappie sometime soon.

Pleased there will be a new recording with Playing The Game on it, and Zizi Charlie and the rest of the cast. Are we expecting live or studio recorded?
But I don't really think we need a recording of Petula croaking her way through Feed the Birds...

What a shame that they will miss the Christmas market for this...perhaps will be on sale in the theatre first in the run up to Christmas.Can’t wait to get my copy.

The Cam Mac live ones are great quality but that's been the go to for him of late so glad he's gone back to studio. Personally I feel the extra quality gained in a studio recording is more important than the 'drama' that a live recording brings. Still, if it's already been recorded, dunno why they can't have it out for Christmas. |

I saw this last night and we were out by 10.15 - so I'd say it's about 2 hours 40 minutes including the interval.
I really loved this - I have to admit, I've been looking forward to seeing this for so long I did tear up a little bit during the overture (btw, the band sounded amazing). There are so many iconic songs in this, complimented beautifully by the newer songs by Stiles and Drewe and it was a joy to see them performed on stage - my favourites would be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Anything Can Happen but I loved them all.
Zizi Strallen was brilliant - lovely voice (and hit all the very high notes) with a great portrayal of Mary with a slightly mischievious side. Charlie Stemp was born for this role - great singing, terrific dancing and a friendly Bert. Joseph Millson and Amy Griffiths were excellent as Mr and Mrs Banks, as were our Jane and George - Ellie Kit Jones and Edward Walton. Petula Clark was fine, but I did feel Claire Moore was a little bit miscast as Miss Andrew.
As for the tricks - I'm still trying to figure out some of them (mostly the getting the items out of bags), and while the wires were quite visible for the flying, it really didn't spoil it for me.
Overall, it was a magical evening - I can see this one running for a while.
