Got an e mail just now from Charing Cross theatre and it said
Very soon we will be announcing our new season at Charing Cross, including the world premiere of a new musical, and the long awaited UK premiere of a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Watch this space for the exciting announcements of what these will be!
Let's start guessing.

Was thinking maybe A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Visit( Maybe with Shelia Hancock) or Next to Normal. Would be a very fun venue for Hedwig.

It wouldn't be the UK premiere of Hedwig though.
Please by some miracle let it be Next to Normal, I can't think of anything more long-awaited than that.

Next to Normal isn’t a Tony Award winning musical, where a Gentlman’s Guide..............is, could also be Hedwig.
Next to Normal and Hedwig could go straight into the West End and bypass the fringe.

The original post isn't specific about what Tony award (s) this musical in question won, we can't leap to "why, it simply MUST be a Best Musical winner!" conclusions based on so little info.

But if you are using in your advertising a “Tony Winning Musical”, you would expect a Tony for BEST MUSICAL or BEST MUSICAL, not for outstanding score or outstanding actress.
Also every producer and artistic director have tried to get the rights for Next to Normal, but simply David Stone (owner), will not release them , he makes a fortune from Wicked, so why would he?

If it won a Tony it won a Tony....as Baemax says, you're jumping to conclusions that don't exist. Winning for Outstanding Score would still be just as "impressive" as winning for Best Musical or Revival, as it implies that the score is award-winning, and that makes up a large part of the musical. But anyway, we can see exactly what they mean when whatever show it is, is announced! |

As an example, Newsies is advertised here as a Tony Award winning musical, despite the fact that Once beat it for Best Musical. I've seen it time and time again in promotions for shows.

Is there a small chance it could be Dear Evan Hansen? I know it’s not exactly “long-awaited” but there’s definitely a lot of excitement for the possibility of it from the UK theatre community. They might want to try it Off-West End first to see if it’s the same hit over here and if it can do well without Ben Platt. I don’t know though maybe they might be able to market it in the West End straight-off with Pasek and Paul’s Greatest Showman success.

A Tony Award winning musical is one that won best musical or revival. But that's simply not true. A Tony Award winning musical is a musical that has, as the phrase suggests, won a Tony Award. There is absolutely no category of Award specified. Not even you have specified a category. Just Tony Award winning. As in won a Tony Award. Any Tony Award. You're making up your own specifications that don't make much sense and then claiming them as fact! |

Next to Normal isn’t a Tony Award winning musical Alice Ripley says . . . W Ha love the clip. Next to Normal is excellent, I saw it 3x on the Great White Way. It deserved its Tony for best score and orchestrations, as did Alice Ripley deserve her best actress musical. Billy Elliot deserved the win that year for best musical (this is controversial.) If the Charing Cross Theatre did say it is bring a Tony winning musical and it was Next to Normal, that would be underhanded, but I am sure no one on here will be complaining, not me!!! As I said earlier every producer and artistic director have tried for this and failed, as David Stone won’t budge on the rights. If you were David would you release the rights to the Charing Cross Theatre, that has no real track record of putting on revival, or would you release the rights to a more prestigious theatre, such as the Menier, National and Young Vic? This is what I think David will do in the next 5 years, with a view of taking it back to Broadway. |

I doubt it is Great Comet or DEH. It says "long awaited"... Those won Tony Awards barely a year ago.
