Well this was fantastic. Although it isn't being televised it's a shame because it would have worked brilliantly. All of the songs were 'acted out' in, more or less, stage costumes too. There was a little bit of dialogue but I found it just as emotional as the full musical, actually more so because it was so well performed. The orchestra was sensational under John Wilson. We've come to expect that but it considerably exceeded my expectations. Rhythmically as tight as possible but all the pianissimo bits had a real frisson. He got the strings to sound like the Vienna Philharmonic in their plush richness at the start of I feel Pretty. Ross Lekites was a very strong Tony. He has a very appealing beseeching quality to his voice, with heft for the climaxes but also a lovely falsetto. Eden Espinosa was a characterful Anita, although she has a slightly mannered, below the note, attack. Louise Alder sang Somewhere fabulously. Micaela Bennett was outstanding as Maria. After all the kerfuffle over the casting of this part she ended up, with strong competition, being the best thing in it. She has a glorious voice; quite a strong vibrato, but also able to 'float' high notes exquisitely. She did I feel Pretty (a song that often disappoints in performance) better than I've ever heard it. She also blended beautifully with Tony in Tonight.

Totally agree with above - although can’t comment on Vienna Philharmonic, I absolutely loved that strings arrangement for I Feel Pretty - the delicacy of two violins, two cellos and a bass in that space was just mind-blowing. I too thought Mikaela Bennett was outstanding.
I wish I was going again this evening, I shall have to content myself with iPlayer, but watching this orchestra is almost as much pleasure as listening to it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon.
The bad was no one on stage for the dance and rumbles which made things a bit weird, Tony and Maria meeting on an empty stage no eyes across a crowded dance floor
The rest was fabulous.
The orchestra were incredible and the score zipped along beautifully, it was a real joy to hear. Such a difference to have such a full and lively sound. Riff was particularly great, as was Maria, her voice really filled the cavernous Albert hall effortlessly. A boy like that was a real highlight for me.
On a shallow note the Jets really filled out their tshirts well.
Wish I was going tonight as well

I adored this as well - I agree the lack of dancers and ensemble on stage at times was strange (it was particularly problematic during America), but it allowed the focus to be solely on the fabulous John Wilson Orchestra, who were outstanding. I Feel Pretty was a highlight for me as well.
The weak link for me was the Mountview/ArtsEd chorus - it worries me slightly if the future of the West End can't even sit down and stand up in unison - their timing for the choreography was atrocious, and I thought their "acting" (as such) in America was a mess. They sounded good the rest of the time, but my choir director at school would have given us a stern telling off for being so messy with entrances, and we weren't specialist theatre students who should know better!

Looking forward to listening to this on iplayer. Gutted I couldn't get tickets as I've been to every John Wilson Proms so far. And never seen West Side Story.

Contemplated going and even logged in online just after 9am only to find 980 people in the queue before me an (in truth) on a personal level, this week as been difficult and I was just tired, so after finishing overtime at 2, I had some lunch and took a nap.
I know, I'm getting old!

I enjoyed this very much. The orchestra sounded wonderful and it was in general very well sung. It's a real pity that they couldn't reproduce the wonderful Jerome Robbins' choreography.
The three leads didn't quite cut it for me though. Mikaela Bennett and Ross Lekites both sang competently enough but they were nothing special and had no chemistry. The biggest problem for me though was Eden Espinosa, she sang well but looked far too old to play Anita, totally miscast. Her green dress was really unflattering, truly dreadful, what were they thinking?
The rest of the cast were quite good and Alistair Brammer nailed Gee, Officer Krupke.
Overall, a great night out. John Wilson never disappoints.

Just listened on iPlayer.
Excellent music, but wow, what it's short! According to the presenter, it's the licenced concert version. Basically it cuts out 90% of the dialogue. I don't think you'd have a chance of following the show if you didn't know it well already (perhaps easier in the venue with the acting).
The programme on iPlayer looks a lot longer than it really is, as there's chat at the beginning and during the interval, as well as 35 minutes of previews for other proms at the end. Skip those bits and it lasts about 90 minutes.
They mentioned on the broadcast there's a surround sound type version released on Monday which you listen to through special headphones (there is a better term than that, but I'm not much of an audio expert). I'm sure it will sound even better than way.

Is it going to be broadcast on TV? Sadly not. Apparently, due to the forthcoming movie, the Bernstein rights holders wouldn’t give broadcasting rights for this. Seems utterly stupid, if you ask me - there is no way that putting last night’s Prom on TV would have done anything other than revive more interest in the piece ahead of the movie’s release. John Wilson is conducting On The Town in a fortnight, the Prom on the exact date of what would have been Bernstein’s 100th birthday. That one is being broadcast on TV. I think I read that it would be broadcast live, but I can’t quite remember. Louise Dearman and Nathaniel Hackmann are listed as cast members but the remaining cast is yet to be announced (with just two weeks to go!!)

Katie Derham mentioned On The Town last night. When Proms Extra ends at 7.30, the live broadcast will start.

I'm grateful to this board for explaining to me why Mikaela Bennett cancelled a concert she was scheduled to do at Lincoln Center last week (songs to texts by Shakespeare, by everyone from Vaughan Williams and Quilter to Sondheim and Dankworth). A week or so before the concert, Lincoln Center announced that she had cancelled because of an "unforeseen scheduling conflict". I was peeved, because I had bought a ticket to the concert largely because of Bennett (who was one of two singers on the program), after having heard her in a revival of the musical "The Golden Apple" last year (when she was still a student at Juilliard) and marked her down as someone to follow. Anyway, now that I know what the "unforeseen scheduling conflict" was, I'm somewhat less peeved, because it's understandable that she would turn down the Lincoln Center concert (which was in a venue that seats fewer than 200 people) for a chance to sing Maria in "West Side Story" at the Proms.

Just listened to this on iPlayer and thought everyone was fantastic. My favourite musical. Always thought that America sounds better with men joining in too but nonetheless I loved it

I was fortunate enough to get tickets for the matinee - my favourite ever musical and I've heard the music more times than I care to think, but I couldn't believe how phenomenal the orchestra sounded. Completely took my breath away. Ross Lekites' version of Maria was the most beautiful I've ever heard it sung and the Quintet was just amazing. I agree, if you didn't really know the show, it might have seemed a bit disjointed due to no dancing, etc ..but for me it didn't detract at all. In fact, I loved how the lack of dancing made you focus on the orchestra more rather than the singers. For me, the orchestra were the real stars. A performance I shall never forget.

For those who haven't had enough of a proms West Side Story fix we were at the late night National Youth Jazz Orchestra prom last night which was advertised at the time of booking as being Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and also 'showcases the popular side of Bernstein'. The latter turned out to be a 40 minute energy filled performance of the Stan Kenton take on West Side Story. Well worth a listen to on the iplayer: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bf47fn
