If anyone has seen it I would be very interested to know how large Damian Humbley & Sophie-Louise Dann's roles are. I'm only interested in the show because they're in it, Hamilton is not my taste, so it would only be worth my while to go if they are in a reasonably large part of it.

Please don’t say they are blacking up in it Fear not. Dann and Humbley are add-ons. Very funny,, both of them. The show itself is funnier than most Forbidden Broadway. Such a talented cast. When it is on target it is fantastic and , for most of the night, it is! Wouldn’t be surprised by a transfer. |

A handy stop off on the way back from Chichester, snagged a £22 ticket from todaytix in a sweltering Menier.
A hilarious spoof show, if anyone has been listening to the cast recording, disregard that, as this has been changed................a lot, now the show has Elaine Paige, Judy Dench and Prince Harry in it. Damian Humberley is hilarious as George III, it is Gerard Alessandrini who makes the charachters funny and he is an ingenious and deserves a special Tony, if he’s hasnt got one already.
1hr 25min no interval.
4 Stars.

A super talented cast (with one glaring "guest star" exception) bring this fun parody to life. I wonder how much of it will resonate to those (if there any any) who have NOT seen the show in question but there no doubting the brilliance of the creator. Hugely enjoyable.

Caught this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I knew the songs well as I have the CD. It's pretty much the same with some additional material to make it an 85 minute show. Cast superb and some stunning voices all round. Sophie Louise Dann does the non Hamilton stuff and I won't spoil it by telling you what Damian Humbley does.
I do, however wish they had bigger parts but I can understand why this isn't the case.
I'm not sure how someone who does not know Hamilton will find it as that is 90% of the show.
Audience seemed to really enjoy it but there were some jokes which fell a bit flat and only a few of us laughed. I think that showed which of us were big musical theater geeks.
Great fun and we'll worth a visit.

Any reason why the seating plan is different between previews and full fat? Today has the centre aisle, so seats 15 & 16 are missing for rows A to E, but on Sat 18th August they are present, therefore no aisle.

When I was there on Tuesday there was no centre aisle which is unusual for the menier when the seating is in its "normal" format. Box office told me that later performances are showing a centre aisle on the seating plan. It's a bit odd. |

Yeah, I can't comment on the layout - I was far Stage Left Row B - thought there was at least a partial centre aisle as the King wandered up a couple of rows into it, but beyond that it wasn't used (if there was a full centre aisle.) There were several entrances/exits down the side aisle near me.
The show: we REALLY enjoyed this. A spectacularly talented cast who were (I cut and paste at this point): Marc Akinfolarin (Assassins, The Color Purple), Jason Denton (School of Rock), Eddie Elliott (Motown), Liam Tamne (The Phantom of the Opera) and Julie Yammanee (Lazarus), with special guests Sophie-Louise Dann (The Girls) and Damian Humbley (Merrily We Roll Along).
Everyone was good - but most of the heavy lifting was done by the first five who played all the Hamilton characters, except for the King. All were terrific singers/movers and very funny. Julie Yammanee struck us (I'm speaking in the royal 'we' - I mean my daughter and I) as a particular find - she could do everything. It was laugh out loud funny pretty continuously. I think if you didn't know 'Hamilton' at all (and I think that may have been the case with a few in the audience) it would be pretty baffling (even though they do a nod to a few other musicals.) So if you have booked, make sure you've at least listened to the cast album.
Really great summer fun!

No central aisle on Thursday night.
I didn't enjoy this much. Some bits were mildly amusing but most of the time I was bored. The Forbidden Boadway format is imho much better than trying to focus in just one show 90% of the time.
The show takes for granted that the audience is familiar not just with Hamilton but with the Broadway production and its performers and it constantly mentions Lin, Daveed, Phillippa et all assuming everybody knows them which clearly wasn't the case on Thursday night and many of the jokes fell flat.
The bits from other shows were not funny either. Doing them in pairs to save time didn't work for me. The Lion King and I or Les Miserabba were quite meh.
For me the funniest bits where the brief ones with Damian Humbley and Sophie Louise Dunn. Humbley's vocals as King George were excellent and he could be excellent in Hamilton. Dunn was brilliant as Elaine Paige and Julie Andrews, not so much as Liza. But then again if you have seen Christine Pedi doing Liza in Forbidden Broadway you realise nobody can beat that.

This afternoon - Centre aisle for first 5 rows as the seating plan promised.
Well performed show with some funny musical/performer bits and some more funny bits if you know Hamilton. Probably not worth top price but worth a look if you can get a deal.
No OSO which was nice.

Was also there this afternoon. I enjoyed it but wished I hadn't listened to it beforehand to be honest as was most amused by the new bits they'd added that came as a surprise to me. The cast are very good.
Personally think if people are going to see a Hamilton parody then they should have enough knowledge of the show to know who Daveed Diggs etc. (and certainly Lin) are. I mean this is one of the more iconic and well known OBCs of recent years.

Possibly and I can see how a more detailed knowledge might help. As someone who’s seen Ham once and listened to the OBC twice I could follow most of the broader themes. Problem is, maybe it’s not that funny anyway. I base that on a quick comparison with the Mischief Movie Night where the humour was broader and worked on more general musical themes. I found that much funnier and anything so specific is going to struggle. If you tried a spoof Phantom or Rent (ignoring Team America) then it might well be more funny to me as I’ve watched more of them but would still require a more detailed knowledge to appreciate the humour and that may run out of steam well before the 85 minute run time.

I (luckily, so it seems) saw it last night - absolutely loved every single second. For me, it was totally laugh-out-loud hilarious and some of the parodies were as genius as Hamilton itself!
So there was an understudy on last night, who covers all male roles. His very first walk-through of the show was yesterday afternoon and then he was on that evening, meaning no tech or dress run for him. He did a sterling job and SLD pushed him forward for a solo bow at the very end. Gerard Alessandrini came on before the show started (which was running late) to explain how they'd been re-blocking and re-choreographing numbers right up until opening and that it would be a slightly different show as they would be performing a cut show, but they would also actually be adding bits *in* to fill time they were losing elsewhere. Thought that since Sophie & Damien were there, they'd rehash some old Forbidden Broadway stuff but they didn't and I've no idea which bits could've been added that wouldn't be there in the first place. I later learned that one of the cast members actually performing was injured himself, and that's where lots of the re-blocking/choreographing came from as he couldn't manage bits of it. So tonight, I'm guessing the understudy was having to go back on for the track he did last night, but the actor with the injury last night can't perform tonight, and with only 1 male cover they have no choice but to cancel the show. Obviously I've no idea if that's the truth, but it's the most accurate guess I can make at the moment!

I was sat next to 2 older ladies this afternoon who had never seen Hamilton, didn’t know who Lin is let alone the rest of the Broadway cast, hadn’t seen Forbidden Broadway, and seemed only vaguely familiar with musical theatre generally (they didn’t laugh when Liza appeared!). I did ask them why they’d booked, one of them was visiting the other for the weekend and they wanted to see something a bit different. They did enjoy it, even though they clearly didn’t get 90% of the jokes. There were definitely a few other oldies afterwards saying they loved it and don’t know why the reviews said you needed to have seen Hamilton. I guess if you don’t know what you’re missing you don’t know what you’re missing! I had a lot of fun, though I did feel there were moments that were uncomfortably close to being mean-spirited about Lin himself. |
