I didn’t think of Hylda ( Hilda?) Baker but that kind of interpretation of the nurse must be as old as the play, cos it is written like that isn’t it? If you see what I mean...

No, she is immortal, witness the fact she is still being referenced in plays today. Anyway, you’re saying you don’t remember any popular culture from when you were 13 ? In reality you remember ALL popular culture from that age. According to Wikipedia her series in the 70s was on ITV. We didnt watch ITV. Immortal? Behave. "We didn't watch ITV" - ha ha - not even with a scented handkerchief pressed to your nose ?

This discussion immediately made me think of this: Oh yes i recall this farrago, i had to ask my parents who they were. More of a burlesque than a farrago.

Nope, my mum was a nurse and didnt allow handkerchiefs, seeing them as germ carriers. Thought you'd like that. Not watching ITV back then was common among my peers.

Yes, some of my schoolmates were not allowed to watch ITV, except for the News and wildlife documentaries.
Arthur Mullard was a very nasty piece of work, it turned out after his death.

I think not watching ITV was quite standard at one time - certainly when I was a child - regarded as infra dig and shameful.

Just back from seeing this. Struggling to find any positive or redeeming factor other than the fact it came down before 10pm. I love Shakespeare at even the worst of times but productions like this make me understand why a lot of people ‘don’t like shakespeare’. Uninspired direction, strange casting choices.. not one for me I’m afraid.
