It looks as though you're very good at making the whole review of a show about you, so... is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? Fare thee well, Mr Nick Curtis, I will certainly steer clear of your non-informative, poorly researched and self-centred reviews in the future! Critics are surely employed to give a personal opinion, whether you agree with it or not? They definitely are, and I'm always happy to hear all sorts of opinions, especially those I don't necessarily agree with as they give me food for thought and at times they've helped me change my mind. In this specific case, however, I felt the tone of the review got dangerously close to what you could get from a tweet from a random audience member saying (way more concisely) "Really didn't get this show and didn't enjoy it". Which is perfect and perfectly valid as such, but I think that a review from a professional critic should inform and give readers what they need to decide whether to see a production or not. To give you a (completely made up) example: "Ugh, enough with reprises - if that Hades guy rambles about that wall once more I'm leaving my seat!" is perfect in a fan's post on social media. Of course a critic can think and feel exactly the same. But when it comes to writing an article, I'd rather they wrote something like "The score is full of recurring musical themes, and many of the songs are reprises of ones the audience has heard before. Although that means that different characters have a "signature" style or even a melodic line that introduces them when they return in a scene, this makes some of the songs feel redundant and doesn't really progress the plot. For instance, I found that Hades' singing about building a wall became less and less interesting with every repetition". This gives the readers some facts, provides a technical/expert comment on those facts, and includes a personal take on why those facts made for a less than brilliant experience. The ES critic... went directly to the bit where he had a less than brilliant experience

Does the show sell posters? Not at the merch stand (at least not when I went at the last preview). However the loyalty card says that one of the rewards is a signed poster but that’s not till you’ve been 12 times.

Wait - is that for real?? yes, I got the loyalty card when I went Visit 6 gets you a badge, Visit 12 the signed poster. While I'm not sure it's an amazing incentive (those who see a show so often will likely also be frequenting the stage door to get stuff signed there) I love the fact that some productions are starting to reward fans. I hope somewhere down the line we might see "see us 10 times, get the 11th visit for free" offer or some genuinely special thing like a Meet & Greet.

When did merch excitement move to badges and tote bags may I ask!?
Badges fair enough are nice as a freebie, esp if limited edition (but wouldn't spend money on!)
Tote bags I think are awful things lol! Well, maybe not awful. But totally non moving....
Very much still about programmes and souvenir brochures for me (though beyond that I do like a mug!)
Am I a dinosaur? Guess must be as every producer is doing these totes nowadays; and hardly anyone does brochures!

Tote bags cost nothing to make and have a huge mark up on. Big money spinner. Brochures cost more to make in terms of time and money. I agree though, it's brochures (always) and the occasional mug.

Saw this today, absolutely LOVED it. I rate this production higher than the Broadway one, massively helped by Donal Finn and Grace Hodgett Young having genuine chemistry, whereas Carney and Noblezada felt like absolute strangers to me.
I couldn't recognise any major changes from the Broadway one, although the use of the actor's regular accents was noticeable, and a positive for me. Obviously it doesn't work for every type of show, but Hadestown isn't as tied to a geographical location so much as it is to an atmosphere, which isn't diminished by the accents at all.
Donal Finn is so much more likeable an Orpheus than Reeve Carney, it really made a big difference to my enjoyment.
Already booked to see it again, easily between 4 and 5 stars if I was to assign it some kind of rating.
Audience were VERY into it, which added to the excitement, although I managed to get a very good ticket with one day's notice which, although great for me, isn't usually great for a show.

Saw the show last thursday. During Wait For Me only one side of the set parted. Other side stuck. Act 2 started over 30 mins later than planned after they finally managed to move the set. Then at the end of the show they didnt do the move back. And to top everything off, the lights outside the theatre were off before and after the show. Interesting day!

Like it or hate it a lot of people like the merch at shows. And it is a good revenue source, which is why I’m surprised when shows run out!

For this reason I'm considering starting a new theatre accessories business called 'Totes Amaze'.

Brought tickets months ago but am not been able to get anyone to go with me and wont for the rest fo the run so was going to resell for face value but Nimax only send the tickets with a QR code so I am unable to put them on well known reselling website. So I just have to write off the money. Am already losing money on 1 or 2 other shows recently but I didn't expect to not even be able to attempt a sale.
Also I think it's wrong there is no print ticket option even offered.

The original Broadway cast is far superior vocally.
Grace Young’s “local” Nottingham accent is particularly grating - continually takes you out of the story and back to “local Britain”.

Oh, I loved this tonight. I've seen this 8 times on Broadway and once in 2018 at the National. Dónal was the best Orpheus I've personally ever seen. I can't even put into words how much I loved him. His voice is gorgeous, as was Grace's - I think people had been saying they had been having vocal issues? If so, none of that was on display tonight. Melanie as Hermes again, I just adored. The only thing I was a bit on the fence about was Zachary James as Hades. He didn't have the "booming" voice I think really is needed for the role. He has the right look and he WAS quite good, but not having that commanding sound kind of detracts from the role. Just my two cents on that. But yeah, really loved it. And it was nice to see it with an audience who doesn't know it and hearing a theatre-full of genuine reactions to it. An easy five stars.

Simon Oskarsson just posted he is on as Orpheus for the rest of this week for anyone interested in seeing him. Gosh. He’s sure missing a lot of shows isn’t he? I know this is old but Dónal was filming for a tv show he was in that week! Preplanned months in advance, it was why Simon was able to go on so easily the week before when he was unwell

Dónal’s Orpheus is one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time. Anyone who is unsure on whether to see this or not, I highly recommend you do. Still need to see Grace, as she was off. However the cover Madeline did a beautiful job.
