Which are the better awards in your opinion? In regards to the actual awards, the ceremony, performances etc. Tonys for presentation, equal on musicals awards, Oliviers for play awards.

Both are an irrelevance to anyone outside of the minute bubble of people in theatre.

Both are an irrelevance to anyone outside of the minute bubble of people in theatre. That...wasn't the question but ok. Beside, I wouldn't say that Tonys are irrelevant. They seem somewhat popular in the states and completing an EGOT is seen as important.

The Tonys without a doubt. They're bigger, they're splashier, they're glitzier, they mean more.
The Tonys are like going into Mayfair and buying a gorgeous bag. The Oliviers are like going to Hong Kong and finding a cheap knockoff of said bag.
They may look alike from a distance but one is going to last you a long time and get admiring glances, the other is going to fall apart as soon as you put a lipstick in it and give you a rash on your hand.

The Oliviers, without a doubt.
If you win an Olivier, you get a statuette of Larry. If you win a Tony, you are given some horrible bit of tat made from monkey metal, mounted on an onyx base. No comparison.

Until SOLT figures out a way to create an Oliver Awards Ceremony that doesn't always feature a tribute to either Cameron and/or ALW , or an irrelevant guest star ( remember Barry Manilow a few years ago?) and an actual host with a relationship to the theatre and a script for the ceremony which mixes intelligence with snarkiness, then they will always be less important than the Tonys. And to have a ceremony telecast at 10:20 at night after the winners have been announced on Twitter and Facebook ( but no facebook streaming to the UK because of the delayed telecast -WTF?) is something which automatically demeans the awards themselves. It also doesn't help that the categories are peculiar - Best New Comedy? Comedies aren't plays? Who exactly wins the revival category - director? Then why doesn't the director get the Best Director nod? Outstanding achievement in Music? How does what Lin Manuel does compete with what the music department accomplished with Follies? SOLT needs to do some serious soul searching in order to maintain ( or attain) relevance.

and an actual host with a relationship to the theatre Ummm, I don't think Catherine Tate is too shabby in the theatre department personally . . .

It has to be the Tony's, no?
I mean you want to win an EGOT not an EGOO.
BAFTA's are not as big as the Oscars and the Oliviers are not as big as the Tony's.

I mean you want to win an EGOT not an EGOO. Well the producers were certainly left with egoo on their faces this morning after forgetting about Peter Hall.

Oliviers here. To be perfectly honest, the Tony doesn't register much on my radar.

You're right, I guess it was just that she wasn't that effective a host and she's an infrequent personage on the stage. I understand the need for a TV name but perhaps someone who had a more balanced career divided between TV ( or film ) and theatre would've brought something more personal to the proceedings.

Tonys all the way. I'd rather watch 2 hours of the Tonys than the Oliviers, any day of the week.

The Tony's - Neil Patrick Harris' opening numbers (when he hosted) tops everything Agreed! I think his 2013 opening number (written by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, I believe) will forever be, in my opinion, the greatest opening to anything ever. The sheer love and joy of all the performers and audience brings me to tears every time I watch it!

People might have had their complaints about Catherine Tate hosting the Oliviers but at least she’s more likely to be asked back than last year’s Tonys host...

The fact that he was horrid at it should have been enough to assure that. But the rest is just Aw Hell Naw (to quote SNL)

INT. Society of London Theatre Headquarters
SOLT: We need to get The Oliviers out to a wider audience and show the British public how important these awards are for our industry! ITV: We’ll broadcast it for you! SOLT: Brilliant! Let’s get it online also to reach a larger crowd in the UK ITV: Ah... SOLT: What? ITV: well, we’ll want to package it up and ideally schedule it at a time that people aren’t really bothered to watch a bunch of people singing and dancing. This isn’t 1975 and it’s not like you’re the BAFTAs or anything. SOLT: riiiight, so let’s stream it on say, Facebook, so people can see it... people still use Facebook right?! ITV: ah, you see, we sort of now have exclusive rights for the show and what gets out on air in the UK, so we can only allow people outside the UK to watch it live.. SOLT: So, our target audience can only watch bits of it at a time you deem is right for our somewhat old fashioned industry awards show? ITV: Sooorrry. But here’s some cash. SOLT: I guess we’ll give it another go next year. Plus it’s not like these awards help sell tickets anyway. We’re not the Tonys after all!
