Just seen this. Anyone else? Incredible film. (I’d actually stayed in one of those hotels twenty years or so ago...!)

I saw it and liked it a lot. I saw it last November, at a screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York at which Sean Baker (the director) spoke afterwards. He was very funny and articulate. I can't now remember everything he said, but I remember that someone in the audience asked him if the parents of the child actors were concerned about the children hearing all the profane language that was used in the movie. He said he told the children that they were going to hear a lot of bad language, but the only time it was permitted was between the time he said "Action" and the time he said "Cut", the rest of the time it was off limits -- and the kids respected that.

There was some discussion about TFP in the London Film Festival thread as a few of us saw it there: theatreboard.co.uk/thread/3470/bfi-london-film-festival-2017I won't go into it again but in that thread it got a fairly mixed response - I was not keen on it although I could see what it was trying to achieve. Part of my problem is that I just found the children insufferable, but that probably says more about me than it does about them.

I liked it but quite a few of the people in my screening walked out.

I saw it a few weeks ago, and found it very powerful. I'm still thinking about it now. The American dream it ain't. On the one hand it's heart-wrenching, but on the other, rather heart-warming. The cinema must have had a dust problem; by the end, I had to take out my handkerchief and dab my eyes.

I'm well aware that I'm in the minority (again) but I really didn't like it. Similar to American Honey and equally torturous. I don't like using the phrase Poverty Porn, but I'm afraid I'm going to: this film was purest Poverty Porn.

I don't like using the phrase Poverty Porn, but I'm afraid I'm going to: this film was purest Poverty Porn. I found it to be a million miles from poverty porn, it's all down to intentions I think, and I don't think you could fault what this film was trying to achieve. Whether or not it achieved it is of course subjective. Personally I thought it was incredible. The juxtaposition between Disneyland and the motel was just breathtaking, and the shots of the gift shops/colourful buildings... it really stayed with me. I would have been happy to spend more time in the company of the characters, who all felt fleshed-out and completely believable. I also loved American Honey, but I know a fair few people who hated both.
