What shows should go on Tour?
I’ve got a few ideas : School of Rock, Aladdin, Dreamgirls

I could imagine it doing well in large to mid sized venues. :-) This probably won't happen as we've had the 2012/13 arena and 2015 Kenwright tours, but I'd love to see the Regent's Park Jesus Christ Superstar come to some bigger theatres. Also, I'm surprised Cameron Mackintosh hasn't decided to take Half A Sixpence on tour. |

I believe one of our regulars daniel has mentioned a couple of times before that Mormon plans to be going on tour around this time next year, so we'll see! |

Not saying it should tour but I can imagine Macintosh bringing Phantom of the Opera restaged back out after Les Mis has toured.

I'd love Half a Sixpence to tour! I wouldn't be surprised to see Young Frankenstein tour once it closes. And then obviously 42nd Street should most definately go on tour! I agree with Young Frankenstein, but I imagine it will hopefully stay at least until November in London (but would be happy to see it run for longer - it's a brilliant show!), especially as it was designed for Newcastle prior to the West End. |

I would LOVE to see Dreamgirls tour! It’s not a complicated set to tour, will fit into most regional venues and I’m sure people up and down the country will love it!

Mormon tour is set to start next year. School of Rock and Phantom are a couple of years down the line. Nothing on the grapevine for Dreamgirls and Aladdin at the mo, though I'd be surprised if they didn't look at tours when they finish their west end runs. No word on Memphis since the 2015 tour fell through. Which is a shame, there were some cracking titles due to go out then that never happened, including Once, Love Never Dies and A Chorus Line. I'm also surprised that Half a Sixpence didn't tour. It was a cracking production and would have done great in the regions with the right star. All I can think is that Sir Cameron must be focussing on other projects for the time being. It's always changing - things get added and taken out all the time, so it's very fluid until things are properly signed off. 2022 is the furthest that tours are booked at the mo, at least according to my source, so there's a lot of time for things to change! I was so gutted Memphis didn’t tour, I only discovered it towards the end of its run and I would have loved to have had the chance to see it again |

I would love to see Book of Mormon come to Cardiff within the next year summer perhaps but I can see it coming in 2020 at least, I think Aladdin and School of Rock would be perfect Christmas shows for the families, would love to see Beauty and the Beast return as that was my first ever musical I saw shocked they haven't sent it out again with the new film. I think they will keep Aladdin in London for another year to build in the hype with the new film, to make people want to see it in London. I can see Aladdin touring in 2020 Would love to see Love Never Dies tour missed it in London. Hamilton will tour but not till the show is at least 6 or 7 years old in London which is what happens with most of the long runners. Wouldn't be shocked if it turns out to be the WMC'S Christmas show, as we normally do get the big one's over Christmas . |

It gets very disheartening when you get the emails or brochures for regional theatres and a lot of the shows are ones that where there a few months ago or from the previous year. I can can appreciate that they may be popular shows like Blood Brothers that bring in the crowds, but let’s be a bit more ambitious with the programming and try new stuff. Okay, not everything will appeal to everyone, but at least it will provide a bit more variety for people. |

They are all great scores. Better than most of the things that reach the stage these days.
It takes classy casting and quality productions and great marketing to persuade people to give them a go.
But once people get to know older shows, they will love them.

Sunset Blvd is just about to complete an 8 month tour after over 15 years off the road. Miss Saigon is doing 8 months on the road after 12 years off. Matilda is doing it's first UK stint on the road. Kinky Boots goes out for its debut run later this year. For non-Londoners thats some good solid new stuff on the road, before you even take into account An Officers & The Gentleman, The Last Ship and Motown - all shows doing new tours. Granted Wicked, Evita, Jersey Boys, Legally Blonde etc are all doing the rounds after 3-5 years off. It's easy to get bogged down with the low-end productions like Fame, Blood Brothers, Summer Holiday etc all back on the circuit but if you focus on the tree's you'll miss the forest. That said. I'm almost dubious about the future of solid, big productions touring extensively in the future, in the UK at least. I've attended too many shows lately were sales has been terrible, too many empty seats and its does make me question the financial viability of maintaining touring shows. Obviously the cash cow-likes of Les Mis, Wicked, etc, are sure fire box office certs and the little re-hash mini-budget shows will break even by limiting their accounts, its the mid-large range shows that may suffer. Take the West End production of Young Frankenstein, as it is, on the road and I'm not sure it would break even. |
