So bad it’s good.
I thought this show was spoof but apparently it’s serious

Another one-star rave from WhatsOnStage. Three more reviews and they can slap five stars on the poster.

Well Ruthless got some pretty bad press reviews and I adored that, so screw the critics. Going to this in a couple of weeks.

I'm so confused as to why this wasn't a comedy, as it had so much potential with its campy singalong-able songs and an overblown premise. But it took itself way too seriously and (at least when I was there last night) the audience just couldn't get on board with it. It was at its best when it was a bit tongue in cheek, but it was too sincere for the majority of the time, which just didn't work. Also, the strange melding of snippets of text by Shakespeare, Chaucer, Marlowe etc. was quite odd, and although it was probably pretty clever on the page (the programme has 2 whole pages of references), on its feet it got old fast.
The cast were uniformly excellent though, with Oliver Savile and Chris Cowley being particular standouts. Such a shame, I feel bad for them as they were giving some incredible performances, but the material let them down.

Was supposed to be seeing this on Sunday but they’ve unfortunately had to cancel all performances this weekend. Offered us a straight exchange for another performance (or a refund) so I’m now going on the 5th August.

Well Ruthless got some pretty bad press reviews and I adored that, so screw the critics. Going to this in a couple of weeks. I loved Ruthless, it was high camp and low production values. I don't think it deserved the bad reviews at all. I am sad to say this is just low production values. My full review is here viewfromthecheapseat.com/2018/07/06/knights-of-the-rose-arts-theatre/It would be great if it was a Carry on Up the Rose campy comedy but the script takes itself far too seriously. The cast have been instructed to play it seriously too and it just makes the bursts of laughter at the poor song choices; the collective laughter at Hero was the beginning of the end for this, the ghost singing Total Eclipse of the Heart and the awful, awful war horse/lion king horse masks feel like we are laughing at the poor cast rather than with them. Factor in the wobbly set, the GCSE Dance choreography and over reliance on smoke machines and videography you have a stinker on your hands. The reaction on press night was not kind but there were opportunities to improve during previews and they didn't take them. Some factors, like the all white cast cannot change but if they were to rewrite and reinvite the press I would love to see this show improve. I wish the cast member a speedy recovery but I also hope this is an opportunity to boost morale and realise that throwing money at a production's marketing does not guarantee good reviews

I've seen a no-star review from one blogger - and a disgusted tweet to match. Unless it does become a cult "So bad it's good" show, it must be awful for the poor cast to have to carry on when the production has been slated so.

I wonder how many are ill because they have 3 understudies 2 guys and a girl. She covers all the girls and the two guys cover half the guys each.

The show may be bad (I dont know, Ive not seen it) but to not give the talented cast working in the show any stars at all really is disgraceful!

The cast are the best thing about it; great vocalists and getting through the awful dialogue with heart and warmth is not easy.
Three days of cancelled shows suggests a lot more than illness to me after those reviews but I hope a few days away helps them. The laughter at them, which I joined in on, especially at the second half was painful. The audience was not on the side of this production at all and the ones that hated it the most wrote about it!

Illness that swept the in the interval? Did anyone go last night, did anyone seem that bad? I am convinced this is a an excuse to sort this production out otherwise they are extremely unlikely.

Some of the song choices, coupled with the show taking itself far too seriously, sound hilariously cringeworthy. It reminds me of a Sleeping Beauty pantomime I saw a few years ago where the princess pricked her finger and was immediately serenaded by the Fairy Godmother belting out You'll Never Walk Alone for all she was worth.
Can't help but feel sorry for the cast though. As much as the reviews praise them for making the best of the shambolic material, it can't be nice to see the production receive the mauling it's been given.

It does seem very peculiar, particularly because they had cancelled today and tomorrow’s shows before last night’s show began. So whoever is ill knew they would be too ill to perform the next day and the day after, but was well enough to try and perform that night?

Given the fact they cancelled today’s and tomorrow’s performances a few hours before last nights started but went ahead with last nights show tells me it’s more than just illness. Illness may be a factor but I feel there’s also far more to it than just that

I can't tell if we were lucky or missed out when we decided to not see it on our one Sunday in London. I'm leaning to "lucky". (We had a very nice time walking through Hyde Park, seeing the Christo "thing", perusing Harrods and dinner in Maida Vale).

So the show is due back on tonight (tomorrow and all Tuesdays are scheduled off) so it will be interesting to see if it does go ahead and in what state.
