We don't have Sky. Sad I can’t watch the oscars in real time.

Oh I’ll be watching a live link online when we get to time - certainly happy to link it in here (provided that doesn’t break any rules!)

I was at the Oscars twenty five years ago, and in the audience, it was a rather deadly experience, but good to see various tricks going on with the seat fillers hen someone wins an award leaving a seat empty, and also watching everyone rush out for a ciggie in the ad breaks. That may have changed, but it was a very cold scripted affair. We didn't win by the way - having had a latter to flash on the plane over we were upgraded. Coming back empty handed we were not upgraded.

I can't remember when I last watched the Oscars, but it was a loooong time ago. Before they stopped showing them on terrestrial telly and before I was too old to stay up late and manage to be human at work in the morning. I don't think I've even seen any of the nominated films this year. I'm sure you've all appreciated my insightful and helpful contribution to the thread.

Boycotting it. They didn't nominate me for anything.

Haven’t seen the other winners but I think Ladybird will last and become a favourite picture for many people.
As a father of a daughter I can't recall a truer depiction of that period of coming of age. Our relationship featured none of those incidents and our personalities are all different, but I could feel the truth in it.
Some films never win Oscars but stick around forever and inspire many more that follow.
Hope to catch up on some of the others.

News here today is full of Gary Oldman's win for Team GB which is only right of course. Frances McDormand's win and subsequent rousing speech is rightfully gaining attention too. And I'm glad Sam Rockwell has picked up Best Supporting Actor after all the negative press- about the character- soon after the film first appeared. But I've heard no mention of Martin McDonagh, the British creator, writer and director of the film two of the winning actors have been in... I know he didn't win anything, but no mention at all? Perhaps nobody here knows he's British...

Of course it's obvious why Gary Oldman won. Darkest Hour was filmed, partly, in Yorkshire!
Buckingham Palace was unavailable, so those scenes were filmed Rotherham.

I am pleased that James Ivory won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay and love the fact he wore a Timothee Chalomet shirt!!!!

Timothee was robbed though. Gary Oldman was good but it's such a "GIVE ME AN OSCAR!" performance, whereas Timothee's performance was just exquisite. Plus he's such a sweetheart.

Just catching up on the ceremony, the speeches. Love Alison Janney! I hope we can see her in some really good leading roles now.

Well I've had 0 sleep and am approaching the end of the day at work so thought I'd weigh in on how I thought last night went.
Felt they did the right thing and made it about the movies first and foremost and not a political thing like the other ceremonys have been. The awards went to virtually all the people I wanted and it was nice to see a spread across all films, showing what a good year in film it has been. Thrilled that Shape of Water won Best Picture which I totally wasn't expecting - it was my favourite of the nominees and I'm so glad it happened! I'd have loved Timothee Chalamet to have won it, as it felt like Oldman had been given a 'lets get you an oscar' part. He was great, dont get me wrong, but Call Me By Your Name touched a nerve in me so deep.
Frances McDormand's speech was phenomenal - getting all the women to stand in the room was incredible (come on Meryl, if you do it everyone else will!) and really made the point. She really stole the show with that moment.
Oh, and This Is Me was robbed of best song. Keala Settle sang for her life last night, and I seriously thought it was the best song.

I'm glad that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri won in best actress and best supporting actor categories, so that'll look good on the film posters along with mention of its other nominations. Also pleased that Dunkirk won Oscars for three of the technical categories: editing, sound mixing and sound editing, plus it had other nominations. Congratulations, too, to Gary Oldman for the best actor award.

I was hoping Timothee and James would have won so we would have had a youngest winner/oldest winner in the same year for the same film. OK so perhaps that should be "one" of the youngest. But the sentiment is the same. Next time I go out, I want a Ryan shirt!!!!

Next time I go out, I want a Ryan shirt!!!! How sweet but there really wouldn't be enough shirt to capture my complete and utter grandiose sense of self-importance I fear.

The one that really pleased me was the short film about the deaf girl winning. She's been on our local news a lot this week, and the writer and the child both seem fab. It was lovely to see her signing her speech.

I too was pleased to see Rachel Shenton and Chris Overton win for their short film, have been following their story in the news/ British TV. A great success and lovely story behind it.
Feel that there wasn’t really any surprises with the other winners and it might have been good to see others pick up the prizes that were different to the Baftas, Golden Globes etc.
