Well. Give 'em their due, they give it a right old bash I must say. And for those Operaphobes amongst you, fear not. You get all of the opera without the opera singing bits. In fact, with all the students and flag waving and sexy boys strutting around in frock coats, it's like a Spanish Les Mis. Los Miserables, if you will.
Now here is the clever bit, they've taken the opera and adapted it to a more musical theatre style (a 'reimagining' I think the kids call it) complete with Sarah Brightman's understudy in the form of Rachel Lea-Gray. She sings like a dream and does a can-can with the best of them but she's about as much of a temptress as Theresa May I'm afraid. Maximilian Marston fares a little better as Velarde. Lovely voice although he was very quick to turn and become a revolutionary. I blinked and almost missed it. Nice performance from Blair Gibson as Javier, clearly using this show as his audition piece for Enjolras.
All done with a man and a piano except for one ear-splitting part where a full orchestra comes in for a dance break to the Toreador Song. The dancing is rather thrilling with lots of "hey"s all over the place but God knows where they kept the orchestra. The Union Theatre isn't that big.
