She's not who I'd have guessed to go alongside Matt Lucas, but I really do enjoy Alex in things (Carousel and Follies especially.) I think she'll be great!

I wonder who he'll play? It's got to be a singing role. The solicitor? Sir John opposite Caroline Quentin?

I am SO excited for this. Saw it many times back in the early 80s at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre and then it was a fairly regular haunt of mine in London. It never failed to put a massive smile on my face, so here’s hoping I can introduce my hubby to its charm.

Distant memories of Andrew O'Connor (whatever happened to him?!) in the 1994 tour, alongside Rebecca Thornhill who I've seen in many shows since. Can't remember how much comic 'business' he did though. He is now a millionaire Hollywood producer, living in a mansion in LA. Lovely fella & deserves every minute of his success. He was an amazing Bill (only one ever to rival Gary Wilmot in my opinion), & he was also a phenomenal Barnum!!!

After seeing Caroline Quentin on the One Show this evening (she was so enthusiastic, even about Matt Lucas' singing), I've booked tickets for this for a Saturday evening in August. Front row for £10 - hard to resist. Even though we never go to musicals. We'll see.....

I only spotted tonight that they have changed the gender of the Family Solicitor (Parchester)
Given that women were only allowed to enter the legal profession about a decade before the events of Me and My Girl, I find it hard to imagine that the family would have been so progressive as to have appointed a woman as their family solicitor!
I know that would probably be seen as a very minor change to many and that the historical context doesn't really matter but it is the sort of thing that sticks out to me. Given the one of the central themes of the piece is about the ruling elite closing ranks against an outsider from a different class, I just find it tricky to accept that the same elite would have allowed a woman to take charge of their legal affairs.
And yes, I know it is a piece of escapist musical theatre but it is the sort of change that frustrates me as it shows either a lack of research on the part of the directing team or a lack of care.
Perhaps the production will make their reasons for this change clear in the way it is staged - but I somehow doubt it.

She also seemed confident it was going to come to London so I will wait for the transfer which will work out cheaper.

^ These have got me very excited! Looking superb! Will you be visiting Cote pre or post? Pre. You don't think older theatre-goers eat post, do you?
Gorn are the days when you could drive into central London, park the car, see a show, go to Joe Allen's around 10.30, drive home, watch an episode of Coronation Street you'd taped on Betamax, then still have time for a little something before a night cap, and the night-caps got donned.
Definitely pre.
And off the set menu before you ask...

I assumed, @caiaphas, that as an older theatregoer, you'd be going to a matinee. We wouldn't want you dozing off during Matthew's big number!
'Regular' or 'Prestige'? The latter's a bit more but, at your age, who knows what the future holds.

^ Don't get singing I Know Him So Well just yet...
Evening actually. You can't beat getting to the theatre in summer around 6.30, drinks outside, spotting the odd cast member before they go in, eyeing up the young usher who you've ear-marked to lend a hand as you try to stand at the end. Oh to be able to stand up without some sort of aid...
And Regular.

Well I left my house 4 and a half hours ago, and am still almost 50 minutes away so it’s very touch and go if I’ll make it for curtain up (thank you train delays and rail replacements) but I’m really looking forward to this when I get there!

Chichester and Me & My Girl seem like a perfect pairing, so I'm not quite sure why this doesn't quite work.
For me I think it's partly down to the tone of the piece and the leading man. The design and direction have a more realistic bright young things feel to it (e.g. implied drug taken and authentic looking sets) but the piece itself is light hearted fun and the leading man here is very much characature. This brings me to Matt Lucas who just isn't believable as a cockney charmer and has no chemistry with the leading lady. He is basically playing himself, complete with the same vacant expression he has in most things and there is no attempt at character. His voice isn't the best and he can't dance and was out of time for some of what little he actually did in Lambeth Walk. Was weird the leading man being absent for so much of the number.
The ensemble are great and for me the star of the show was Caroline Quinton, owned every scene she was in.
There was an incident with playing cards early in act 1 and I don't know if that was genuine or it's scripted in.
I'm not sure what changing the family solicitor to a lesbian stereotype achieved either.
the show also featured one of the worst stage slaps ever. it was miles off! hoping that was a one off mistake.
I've been waiting years for this show to come back but for me this production missed the mark. The weakest show I've seen in Chichester

Like the above, I’ve been waiting for this show for a long time. And when I heard Matt Lucas was Bill, my heart sank. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, and go in open minded, but he just isn’t right for the role.
Bill is meant (as far as I’m concerned) to be charming, but I didn’t get that at all from him. I quite liked his Leaning On A Lampost if I’m honest, I thought he sang it ok, but the rest of it was a bit of a mess. The cards thing didn’t feel like an in joke - it looked like a mistake that Caroline was trying to cover. Alex Young, however, was wonderful. Made me laugh and had me on the verge of tears. Just what you want in Sally - for me anyway. Caroline Quentin was good but she took too long to feel like she’d earnt her place - it wasn’t till Act 2 I felt she had. Clive Rowe didn’t have enough to do, he’s a lot better than that. And I liked the gender reversed solicitor (im a fan of Jennie Dale) and the hint at a gay relationship at the end. It didn’t add anything but I thought it was a nice touch.
I’d give it 6/10 - I quite liked the production itself. It had a nice set, and the projections were good. But it wasn’t the wow of a production I know this show can be - which is disappointing, as we won’t get a new revival for a long time.

Alex Young took a while for me to warm to but I don't think she is helped by a miscast leading man. She was better in solo scenes.
The whole thing just lacks sparkle and charm and is just a bit flat
