Most knowledgeable ones, please help.
I'm trying to get data - however rough an estimate - as to how many shows are staged in London in typical year. Even if you had to guess, what would you say?
If you have any idea how the number breaks down West End/SOLT vs Off West End/ Fringe, even better.
I've looked at various box office reports, but haven't seen actual tallies for shows.
Any help hugely appreciated.

A quick back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests:
130 fringe theatres with an average of six shows a year => 780 20 larger West End theatres with one show => 20 18 smaller West End theatres with three shows => 54
So a very rough estimate might be approximately 850 shows per year (±300 or so).
Assumptions made: 1) The lists of theatres I found are reasonably up to date. 2) Fringe runs are about a month long, but have gaps where nothing happens. 3) Most of the fringe theatres are active rather than "yeah, we put on a show once". 4) Large West End theatres are occupied forever by one show. 5) Small West End theatres have a moderate turnover.

Vault Festival alone has over 300 shows, if that contributes anything.

Points to consider:
The West End Theatres with the highest number of shows per year are the ROH and Coliseum - 60-70 in a year combined?
Assuming London is Greater London, there are a large number of venues. A list I have is incomplete and is over 300.
Some shows are not in standard venues in any case (a church, hall, outside, etc.)
Apart from the Vaults Festival, numbers are pumped up by other Festivals: Camden, Incoming, LIFT, Streatham, Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, etc. All of these have considerable lists.
Finally, what is a "show"? I wouldn't attempt to answer that!
