I'm super early, but hey I'm bored...
What should be on my radar for a late June trip. Bearing in mind that time is slightly limited by *cough* two full days of *cough* a certain play.
Anyway...go!

Two full days?! I hope you've given yourself a recovery day in between - that much of Mr McArdle and Mr Garfield in a row might just break me...
Anyway, can I hijack this thread and ask also for recommendations for late August/early Sept? Currently thinking about Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen (as I didn't manage to see it last time, though I've not heard good things since Platt left so I'm more doubtful now...), The Band's Visit, Carousel, My Fair Lady and Pretty Woman.
@emicardiff - how about The Boys in the Band? No idea if it'll be good but the cast is amazing (gutted it closes a couple of weeks before I get there!)

How many days have you got?
I would say you should aim for things that are certainly not going to make it to the West End, namely:
Mean Girls The Band's Visit My Fair Lady Boys in the Band Carousel Once on This Island Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (don't judge) ..basically every show I've booked to see.
There's also some B-list shows from previous seasons: Waitress Anastasia Bernadette Peters in Hello, Dolly
And shows from previous seasons that who knew are still running: A Bronx Tale (the only show in this list that I either haven't seen or not planning to)

No idea if it'll be good but the cast is amazing (gutted it closes a couple of weeks before I get there!) haha yes- Wednesday and Saturday. I've even shifted my usual Sat-Sat travel to Mon-Mon in order to give myself a day to recover from the 'Angels Hangover' that I know is coming (let's face it that time is going to be BAD given it's the last time, someone come and pick me up off the floor of West 52nd street...
Anyway, Boys in the Band is on the list- should see it before Angels as part of the 'canon' of gay plays really...
I'm gutted to miss Pretty Woman by a matter of weeks, mine and Mum's favourite film! Speaking of Mother, I wouldn't live to tell the tale if I tried to take her to Carousel- it has the honour of being her most hated musical of all time.
Come from Away and DEH are definite maybes!

I'd second Come From Away (lovely little show with a big heart, albeit way overpriced on Broadway levels) and The Band's Visit as a show for our times.
I'm so over DEH. But that's me.

Definatly Come From Away...I'm not sure about The Band's Visit as people I know/share taste with have really hated it and there's something about it that is a bit 'meh' for me...but hey ho.
And you know how I feel about DEH *rants away*

The Band's Visit is based on the movie of the same name, so maybe watch that to see if it appeals to you? I saw it years ago without knowing anything about it and found it charming and lovely. Haven't seen the musical version though.

The only reason I mentioned I was considering DEH is because I haven't seen it and as a rule I don't generally listen to cast recordings before I see shows, so I'm intrigued as to whether it lives up to the hype!

The specific productions and dates haven't been announced yet, but you will probably be in town for Shakespeare in the Park. There's an online lottery via TodayTix and an in-person line at the Delacorte Theater (enter Central Park at 81st St/Central Park West or 79th St/5th Ave). There's also distribution at the Public Theater downtown, but I'm not sure if it's everyday. You'll also overlap with Stephen Trask's new musical at the Atlantic Theater Company. City Center's Encores Off-Center season starts at the end of June with Songs for a New World.

And time permitting I may well check out Trask's new work as well. I've resigned myself to never managing Shakespeare in the Park tickets in this lifetime after many a year trying...also my Mother may well murder me if I suggest any (long) Shakespeare as a preamble to Angels (again). But hey that's never stopped me before.

You are a rockstar. I had no idea. Sounds interesting, and I loved The Band's Visit at the Atlantic. I might see this.

Parts of Dear Evan Hansen are good and it is enjoyable, but it didn’t blow me away after all the hype (I saw the original cast last April).
Would be interesting to see Bernadette in Hello Dolly. She is a Broadway legend after all - though, in my opinion, always slightly over-rated (I saw her in Gypsy and Follies). Bette Midler was funny and enjoyable in the part, but the production itself was good, so I would go to see it again with Bernadette if I had the chance.
My Fair Lady should be good too.
I agree that you should see things that are not likely to be seen in London. Enjoy the trip.

I think the shows that will get tony nominations are frozen , bands visit, mean girls and one other
plays cursed child, and I actually thought the mark Rylance play would actually get better reviews.
Why is this season so weird.
And Groundhog Day if I had my time again but this is such a bad season maybe wait until next year. Next year looks actually good

If you’re thinking of seeing Dr Evan Hansen, I’d recommend checking word of mouth about whoever is playing Evan while you’re in NY. I naively expected that the producers would be unlikely to cast anyone who wouldn’t be top notch after Ben Platt’s departure, but I got that wrong
We saw Noah Galvin playing Evan and his performance was one note from start to finish (in my humble opinion). That impacted on the rest of the cast and I ended up feeling completely disengaged with the show at a fairly early stage of Act 1.
The score is great, the book is patchy but I imagine with the right lead it would pack a punch. With a less capable lead, the whole thing was very underwhelming (made worse by the ludicrous amount of money we spent on the tickets).
I definitely think it’s worth doing a bit of research on the Evan you’re likely to see in June before you book!

squidward fair and to be honest, I highly doubt I'll be seeing DEH, I had the chance when Platt was still there (just after it opened in fact) but was decidedly 'meh' then. And as much as I quite like some of the score, I don't think it's worth my serious $$ personally (especially if Platt's successors aren't all that) if it comes to London maybe I'll give it a go then! @matildawormwood erm thanks for the 'helpful' suggestion I wait until next year on a trip that's already booked I guess?!

I have plans bubbling away for a trip in early May but don't know if some of these shows will have ended by the time you visit - would definitely like to see Three Tall Women with Glenda and Laurie Metcalf, Denzel's The Iceman Cometh, and more votes for Mean Girls and My Fair Lady (Dame Diana!). Was lucky enough to see Bette last year and would echo that it's definitely worth seeing Hello Dolly with Bernadette - the production was just superb.
Spent two months in NYC last summer and never felt compelled to put much effort into seeing DEH.

Based solely on the presence in the cast of the great Lois Smith -- who, at the age of 87, seems to get better with every performance -- I have already bought a ticket for an off-Broadway play called Peace for Mary Frances. The website of The New Group, which is producing the play, describes it as "a wrenching and caustically funny portrait of an American family in crisis." At the moment, the run is scheduled to end on June 17, but I would guess there's a chance it might extend.

I'm crossing my fingers to get tickets to one of the very early previews of This Ain't No Disco at the Atlantic Theatre Company. I leave on the 1st, so it's tight, and it's only a 200 piece theatre. It's a new musical by Stephen Trask, the composer of Hedwig and Darko Tresnjak, director of Anastasia and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Could be interesting and so far it's completely understated.
