My 21 yr old daughter is a member of our local MT society. During Christmas she had a very sore throat and bad chest. That infection has gone now but she's concerned her upper vocal range hasn't returned. Is this usual/unusual. Any suggestions for remedies to help it return or exercises she should try.

I get that fairly frequently, I've been singing a very passable baritone this winter and I'm normally a mezzo. The cold itself has been gone for nearly two weeks but I'm still not quite right vocally. I'm not worried, as it has happened before and I guess my body's been working on fixing other things first. She should take it easy and not force anything; she doesn't want any damage, and if it hurts to sing at any point then she should stop right away. It's probably worth gently working on scales and arpeggios to see if she can ease her way back up. She should definitely have a word with her musical director for now, see if s/he has any tips, and if it's still causing problems in a few weeks, it can't hurt to see a doctor (maybe make the appointment now, given the current state of things.....).

I'd agree- not unusual, and likely to right itself if not pushed. But doing gentle vocal exercises will also help.
I'm a top (top squeaky) Soprano and it only takes the hint of a cold to rake the top level off for a month or so. Worse ones even longer, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks both for your input. I'm sure it will reassure her.
