Does anyone know when an announcement is going to be made about their forthcoming programme? As far as I can tell nothing is known after Summer and Smoke, which finishes on April 7th. I hope Robert Icke is going to come back and do something, though I understand he is in demand everywhere. After a few new plays in recent months we're surely due a couple of classic revivals?

The announcement for new seasons (Donmar, also) usually comes halfway through the run of the penultimate production in the previous season, so we should hear something very soon.

The new season will be announced at the end of Jan. I was told this by the Almeida last week

The AD and deputy AD obviously have better things to do with their time this year. Still get paid I suppose.
Not that refreshing to see Bijan “Damned by Despair” Sheibani unaccountably given something to direct. Has he ever directed anything good ?

There's definitely a growing sector-wide tendency for blurbs about plays to be written in a way that tells you nothing about what it's about but makes it sound dreadful.

Hahahaha! I love it when people find something to moan about when presented with what looks like a genuinely refreshing season, it's nice to know there's always consistency on TheatreBoard, and I do love a good laugh.

Seriously though - I just googled Machinal, which sounds great when you know what it's about (I'd never heard of it) but the Almeida blurb tells me literally nothing!

The Brothers Size has just received raves at the Young Vic and Barber Shop Chronicles was highly praised at the National last year and came back for another stint. Aren't young directors allowed a failure, especially in the Olivier which is hard enough for almost anyone?

Your earlier post appeared while I was typing mine, it wasn't aimed at you. I've just done a search for Dance Nation 'cos the Almeida blurb, brief though it is, sounded fairly intriguing. It won the Blackburn Prize in 2017, which appears to be a prize for female playwrights, and is receiving its world premiere this spring in New York. We're not getting the same production, but the UK premiere is coming very quick off the back of the world premiere! I'll probably skip £¥€$, I wasn't interested last time it was in the UK and I can't imagine it's got any more intriguing in the meantime. Everything else is fair game though.

Machinal is probably a lot more interesting than the blurb makes it sound. It's based on the Ruth Snuyder murder case which gets a chapter in Bill Bryson's book about 1927. Clark Gable was in the original production

I remember Stephen Daldry and Ian MacNeil's NT production of Machinal with Fiona Shaw. The Almeida blurb is pretty spot on so, if that doesn't interest you, I suggest you don't go.

Lies is brilliant, you have to enjoy participation but it was on my best of list for last year (see end of year roundups thread in General Chat). They'll need to strip out the seating if they want the full effect though.
Machinal also well worth anyone's time, an expressionist (and feminist) masterpiece.

I enjoyed his production of The Kitchen at the NT a few years ago. Speaking of which, I wonder what Tom Brooke is up to these days?

I think it looks like an exciting season and will book for all of them, if I can. I've never seen Machinal but have wanted to as it is such an unusual play (and bit of trivia for you - featured Clark Gable in his Broadway debut.) My fingers may slightly pause over the keyboard for 'The Writer' as 'Oil' which I don't remember being the success they describe - it was all over the place - not in a good way, was written by the same playwright - but then again - it was hugely ambitious, so, probably worth a punt.
