Sorry but to me that's the worst version of sunset recorded. Ball is awful, way too cheesy and happy as joe and petula just doesn't have the voice or acting.
Emma Williams is a great Betty though

I downloaded this from YouTube a couple of years ago and like it a lot.
Petula gave the final London performance of 'Sunset,' and I think she is amongst the best Normas.

She is indeed the best in my opinion. If you have not seen her do it in the mid 90's you missed a theatrical treat.

I was trying to figure out for tomorrow. It's only the BBC I player from tomorrow. I think you can download this for a month, then it disappears. (Not totally sure because I've never done it!) There are several easily -obtainable YouTube copying programmes for downloading clips but I'm fairly sure they'e not officially allowed.

I didn't dislike her too much - and I know that the popular opinion is not in her favor. I saw her in London and in the US tour. She wasn't great, but not unwatchable (I'm looking at you, Ria Jones). Her Sunset EP single is actually pretty nice and beautifully sung (despite the much lowered keys).
Having sad that, this BBC concert should have been either Elaine Paige or Betty Buckley with John Barrowman or Alexander Hanson.
Oh, well. Bootlegs and soundboard recordings will have to do.

As a die hard Petula fan, you will not piss on my parade. She played the part more times than any other actor and ALW would not have allowed that if he didn't see something as well.

ALW has done dumbas*sh*t over and over again, so I'm not sure that holds.
Having said that, you're entitled to like/love her all you want.

You might not appreciate his music, but it has given pleasure to millions all over the world. Many who never saw Petula play Norma live put her down because of her perceived 'pop singer' background. Any research would show she has had a long and varied career.......including, as another poster has said, performing Norma more than any other singer!

ALW has made some bizarre decisions over the years, though (allowing the casting of a Phantom in the POTO film who couldn't actually sing the score, being one that stands out, along with coming up with a sequel to POTO that pretty much dumped on the characters of Christine and Raoul, whilst also having a laughable Soap Opera style plot).

I'm a fan of ALW and his music. I like Petula Clark every now and then. Sunset happens to be my all time favorite musical. hulmeman and gra sound like the same person.

I've just got to the end of the broadcast. I can understand what people were saying about Petula Clark, but as Norma is mentally fragile, I think it works that Norma's vocals are a bit ragged round the edges. I thought her little speech at the end (where Norma has basically regressed to her youth) was well done - she suddenly sounded young! I also get the comments on Michael Ball - Joe does need to be a bit grittier. That being said, I do like MB's voice, and he sang well. Good performances by everyone else.

Petula performed as Norma Desmond 2500 times according to information on the web. I think she really understood the character and as the actress to have played the role most deserves a bit of respect! There goes another Petula rant!

Agree she has probably continued performing for too long, probably because she still has a loyal audience. Still does not take away from her fine Normas.

I didn’t enjoy her performance. I found her vocally weak when I wanted strength and found her little girl lost act intensely irritating. However, I totally respect other peoples opinion and believe that she deserves my respect for her years of service to the industry.

The broadcast was recorded in 2004 when Petula was 72, so admittedly she had lost ome of her power of the 90's when she was playing the part. A pert she played for 6 years including west end and American touring productions.

Did you see her in concert at the Lowry a couple of years ago hulmeman ? I did. Well, the first half anyway 😉 I saw her in Birmingham, probably the same tour (2014 or 2015), where I thought she did a really great job. Not perfect, but very good for someone still singing in her 80s. I also got to meet her and she was friendly and polite to everyone (it was the paid VIP tickets, but she really made an effort).

It was the first night of the tour when I saw her and it was decidedly ropey. I did hear that it improved as she got into her stride a bit.

I saw her in 2016 at Birmingham and also the tour before that a few years before. Met her afterwards at that tour and she was so friendly and we had not paid VIP!

Met her a couple of times and is a total class act, I didn't go to her last tour but I heard that she spent time chatting to fans after the shows and telling them how much she appreciated them. For someone who was in her mid 80's then and must have been tired this was a nice touch as I've heard stories of upcoming "stars" a quarter her age who avoid fans as they are tired after a show.
